Background • Family: Chaniddae • Size: 17 cm – 1.8 Meters • All are considered thrust predators with most being piscivorous—fish-eating—as adults. • Large mouth with a protruding lower jaw that typically contains canine-like teeth. • Coloration and size vary, with the largest one recorded being four feet in length.

  4. Origin & Year Arrived • The Snakehead’s origin was throughout the coast of Indonesia, India, and also China. It arrived in the U.S. in the year 2002.

  5. Introduction of Snakehead to the U.S. • The snakehead was first discovered in the Washington region in 2002, after a man bought a pair of them to make soup, then changed his mind and released the snakeheads into a Crofton pond.

  6. Ecological Impacts • Snakeheads will disrupt the ecological balance and forever change native aquatic systems. • These snakes can breath air and walk from one lake to another. • The snakehead population will multiply if it is not killed out.

  7. Control Methods • To prevent future introductions of potentially invasive fish, citizens of Maryland plan to exterminate all snakeheads in those areas with insecticide rotenone . • Also the citizens drained a few lakes to get the snakeheads out of the area.
