The Snakehead Fish By Eve O’Brien
Background • a non-native air-breathing freshwater fish • Two types: • Channa(snakeheads of Asia, Malaysia and Indonesia) • Parachanna(African snake- heads) • They have a large mouth with a protruding lower jaw with canine-like teeth • They are similar to the bowfin
Native Habitat • Snakeheads have a native range that includes parts of Asia and Africa
Released in U.S. • Some entered U.S. waters via releases by aquarium owners • Some through the live food fish trade by people releasing the fish to establish a local food source • Reproducing populations of snakehead fish are found in Florida and Maryland
Impact • Snakeheads will compete with native species for food • As juveniles, they eat zooplankton, insect larvae, small crustaceans • As adults, they eat other fishes, crustaceans, frogs, smaller reptiles and sometimes birds and mammals • Due to their predatory behaviors, they could alter the balance of our ecosystems • They are air-breathers and are capable of overland migration
Control • Working to try to eradicate the fish • If snakeheads become established in U.S. waters it would likely result in the loss of millions of dollars
