The Grand River Experience • School size: 1400 students • 2 semesters • Each semester – 4 courses • Each day - 4 classes, 75 minutes • School day 8:05 – 2:15 • Lunch -1 hour • Sports, clubs, school activities, leadership opportunities
Graduation Requirements • Successful Completion of 30 Credits • 18 compulsory courses • 12 elective courses • 40 hours of Community Service • Successful Completion of the Grade 10 Literacy Test or Course
Grade 9 Courses • 5 compulsory courses: • English • Math • Science • Geography • French

Course Levels ACADEMIC - covers essential concepts plus additional material - emphasis on study of theory, abstract problems APPLIED - covers the essential concepts - more emphasis on practical applications
Course Levels cont’d LOCALLY DEVELOPED (Essential) - designed for students entering world of work - Fast Forward students take these courses OPEN - one set of expectations that are appropriate for all - elective courses are offered at Open level

Selecting Courses • Current teachers will make level recommendations • Online course selection will occur at your current Elementary school in February • Fast Forward will submit an application and course selection form
Changing Selections • Course Verification Sheets to Grade 8 School in late spring • Make a change • Talk to your grade 8 counsellor before end of June • Contact GRCI the last week of August • September – only level changes where possible
Frequently Asked Questions • What happens when a student or parent chooses a course type other than what is recommended by the teacher? • GRCI counsellors will be informed. This may prompt more discussion with parents and a review of courses.
Frequently Asked Questions • Does a student have to take all the same level of courses? • No students can select different types of compulsory courses depending on their strengths, abilities and work habits • Is it possible to change course levels from Grade 9 to 10? • Yes, in all core courses except math
Nervous? • Grade 8 Day at GRCI – May • Receive at home mailing- August • First Day of School – Special Time for Grade 9’s only • First Week – Early Lunch Dismissal • September – Grade 9 Night
