Trades Considering changing LPW boom whip caging Nick Jedrich Mechanical Peer Review recommendation Change from caged to fixed whip Deletes caging mechanism mass & resources Deletes whip hinge Deletes an actuation Simplifies qualification Concerns being investigated Enhanced vibration on whip, preamp Have ideas for mitigations which look promissing Potential damage to exposed whips during I&T Possibly remove whip for some of ATLO SSL & LM current see no show-stoppers
Issues [1] Magnetics Current sensor location on solar array probably does not work Too close to solar array strings AC magnetics too high Working with Project on alternatives
Issues [2] SWEA Surface Treatment Need to modify thermal characteristics of surfaces in SWEA aperture to avoid excessive heating - candidate solutions in work Candidate solutions need to be evaluated for Atomic Oxygen effects, charging effects, thermal properties, and robustness AO test being organized Current candidates: DAG213, Ebanol-C, Black Nickel SWIA and STATIC also interested SEP detector Atomic Oxygen effects Heritage instruments survives AO, but we would like to test a MAVEN detector if possible. Will be part of planned test
Issues [3] Amptek HV801 failures Seems to be a lot workmanship issue New lot in work at Amptek, but not certain they will be better Projects ahead of MAVEN in trouble, will have higher priority for parts SWIA, STATIC use HV801 Alternative VMI part has acceptable performance Tested in breadboard Much too large for existing layout Significant changes would need to be made to accommodate mass, schedule impact VMI might be convinced to make a smaller part GSFC parts working on this SSL might be able to make an equivalent part
Issues [4] SWEA Planetary Protection CESR part of SWEA FM build in progress Will be assembled before the breakup/burnup analysis complete Current PP plan indicates SWEA is likely to burn up SWEA is small, not a large contributor even if it does not burn up Looking into how clean SWEA fabrication will be Much of CESR SWEA has stringent contamination concerns due to MCP, and so is already built in very clean conditions CESR Electronics assembly is TBD – waiting on a response from CESR Need to decide if we need extra steps such as bio assay
Issues [5] Launch Loads The current random vibe levels in the ERD are significantly higher than anything we have worked to on previous missions 23GRMS for forward deck mounted instruments 47GRMS for MAG MAC curve limit loads are as high as 72g Corresponds to design loads significantly greater than 100G, which is the usual design target at SSL Greater than qualification level for heritage instruments which were expected to fly with minimal changes SWEA, SEP, LPW booms A concern for some structures Historically loads come down significantly once we get CLA CLA is still months off, but well before CDR PFP plan is to follow LM’s lead and not design to these unrealistic loads When CLA comes in there is a risk we will have to do some redesign
Top Risks • New risks 14,15,16
PFP Mass EUV NTE mass increase [CCR164, approved] Other small changes to CBE
PFP Power Include CCR157 Need to reallocate NTE amongst instruments to level magin Liens: Expect to need operational heat during eclipse None allocated for most instruments; amount needed pending thermal analysis Preliminary estimates included for MAG and EUV
PFP Data Rate Per 2009-6-9 allocations from Bruce
MAVEN Magnetometer Status May 19, 2010 Connerney, Sheppard, Schnurr, etc.
GSFC/MAG - Accomplishments Last Month MAG instrument definition now mature. Finalized Peer Review plans – May 25 1:00 pm GSFC 34. Steve Battel, Ken Wagner, Dave Sohl (Curtis, Jedrich, etc.) Provided preliminary sensor assembly and attachment bracket mechanical drawings to UCB/SSL/LM. Assumes sensor accommodated on outer edge of SA substrate panel (1” thick M55J Aluminum honeycomb/CC facesheet panel) Dave Sheppard and Jim Odom met in Denver to discuss the MAG MICD with LM staff (5/10-11/2010). Supported continuing Spacecraft Magnetics Control Board discussions.
Near Term Plans & Open Issues MAG Peer Review preparation. May 25 date selected for tabletop peer review Draft SIP. PDR Preparation. MAG Sensor accommodation options under discussion. Extend the SA panel substrate (1.5 m from SA strings may be possible). Addition of a third hinged panel (may provide ~2 m extension). Other boom proposals (STEREO-like, Astromast-type extensible boom, etc.) mentioned in this context.
MAVEN PFP SWIA Status May 2010 Jasper Halekas, SWIA Lead
SWIA Progress • MICD complete and reviewed • No major issues • Mechanical design presented at peer reviews • A few concerns on purge and attenuator mechanism • Analyzer and front end design presented at peer reviews • No major issues • Preamp and Anode schematics presented at peer reviews • No major issues • Digital schematics and FPGA design presented at peer reviews • Numerous useful suggestions for increasing stability and reducing noise • MCP specifications complete • High current plates approved by project • Quoting in progress with Photonis
SWIA Issues • Staffing • Mechanical engineer staffing continues to be an issue • Greg Dalton becoming overloaded with STATIC, SWIA, and RBSP responsibilities • New ME hire in progress • High launch loads • Extremely high launch load requirements driving mechanical design • Without relief, these could require overdesigning and many changes to heritage designs • Looking at mitigation for HV801 failures
MAVEN PFP STATIC Status May 2010 Jim McFadden, STATIC Lead
STATIC Accomplishments Documentation prepared for pre-PDR reviews STATIC pre-PDR Peer reviews completed Inputs to Flight Software specification completed Carbon foil mounting fixtures designed VMI 15 kV multiplier prototype delivered Modifications to 15 kV HV connector design discussed along with assembly procedures for assembly of parts together Modifications to prototype Anode and Preamp board provided to tech for layout changes for engineering model boards. Test pulse generator for preamp-TDC-Digital testing delivered. Met with representatives from Photonis to discuss MCP order.
STATIC Open Issues RFAs being collected from pre-PDR Peer Review Investigating modification to deflector design to eliminate or reduce scattered ions gaining access into the sensor Stability of the STATIC HV Sweep – testing still on hold due to RBSP conflicts with EE. Waiting on feedback from McBride on TDC part changes. STATIC FPGA still in development – need new test setup for complete throughput test (anode-preamp-TDC-Digital). Mechanical Attenuator still in development – handed off from Bill Elliott to Greg Dalton. Waiting on feedback from building maintenance with regard to changes in clean room (320) ventilation. New 15 kV / MCP board layout to proceed when EE is available.
