Homonym • Homonym comes form the Greek word; “homo” meaning “same” and “onym” meaning “name” • Homonyms are two words with same spelling or same pronunciation but have different meanings. • There are different homonyms: • Homophones • Homographs • Heteronym/heterophone
homophones • Homophones : • Homonyms with same pronunciation but different meaning and may or may not be spelled the same • Examples: • Two(noun)= #2 • to( preposition)= direction, destination or position, • too( adverb)=extremely • Bare (adjective)=not covered • Bear (noun)-furry animal • Write and right • desert and dessert
homographs • Homographs: • Homonyms with same spelling but different meaning and may not have the same pronunciation. • Examples: • Present (gift) and present(to introduce) or present(today) • Close(near by) close(shut the door) • object (a thing) object(say no) • Lives(cats have 9 lives) and lives (I live)
Heteronyms • Heteronyms: • Homonym is a type of homograph and has the same spelling but different pronunciation. Example: • close (near by) • close (shut) • Convict (to find guilty) • convict (a prisoner) • Produce (vegetables) • Produce (bring forward)
