  3. WHAT DO WE MEAN BY COMPETENCIES?

Learning to Do Learning to Know Learning to Be Learning to Live Together Source: Report presented to UNESCO by the International Commission on Education for the 21st Century “Learning: the treasure within”, 1996. Solve daily problems Keep learning Ethically responsible Respect for and ability to work with others. THE 4 PILLARS OF A COMPETENCY-BASED EDUCATION

THE COMPETENCIES SURVEY The purpose of this survey was to discover if APEC economies have: ·Identified a group of 21st century competencies their students must develop and ·Begun to make or actually made changes in their educational systems to incorporate these competencies into teaching and learning

  7. MAIN RESULTS

Key competencies and skills • Lifelong and self directed learning: Learn how to learn; command of technologies. • Problem solving: Innovation and creativity; decision making; planning and organizing. • Self management: Critical, reflective and independent thinking. • Team work: Communication; democratic literacy.

COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS FOR EACH CONTENT SUB-THEME • Mathematics: Thinking; problem solving; decision making. • Science: knowledge; science process skills; science attitudes and values. • Foreign language learning: communication skills • CTE: employability skills; entrepreneurship. • ICT: life long learning.

  10. METHODOLOGIES THAT ENCOURAGE INTERDISCIPLINARY LEARNING • Projects • Research activities • Activities within the community

REFLECTIONS • Integral education of a person for succes in life, work, etc. • Diversity: key element in a globalized world to ensure democratic life, as we learn from each other. • Teacher training to guarantee the implementation of the proposed changes. Must include the civil society (business sector, family and students themselves)
