What is PBIS? • Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. • A proactive approach to school-wide discipline. • PBIS is a program that implements a positive and preventive instructional approach intended to teach and encourage expected behaviors. PBIS is data driven and it establishes a continuum of behavioral support.
Why should we endorse it? PBIS is based on proven research which supports its effectiveness in promoting positive school climates. It also increases students’ academic achievement and social competence.
What is required at CHS in order for PBIS to be a success? • 100% support and involvement of the administration • At least 80% staff cooperation • Diverse representation of staff on the PBIS committee • STARS Data • It is used to guide intervention strategies and support management decisions regarding discipline. • BIP • IEP • SST • Psychological Evaluations
What is required at CHS in order for PBIS to be a success? • Regular communication between the staff, administration, and the PBIS committee • Faculty meetings • Content meetings • Staff, student, and parent surveys • Leadership team meetings • School Improvement Team meetings
We… • Created a Code of Conduct Following the Three R’s • Respect • Responsibility • Ready-to-Learn
We developed… • Procedures for teaching the Code of Conduct to students • Instruction is provided in homerooms • Scripted lessons provided for staff use • Instruction is re-visited at critical points in the school year • Ongoing staff development is provided for the staffs’ instruction and implementation of PBIS • A hierarchy of incentives is provided to encourage the students’ positive displays of behavior(s)
What does PBIS do for us? • It provides consistency throughout the school by using proven strategies and supports when dealing with undesired behaviors • Staff is clearly informed of administrative discipline decisions regarding problem behaviors • School-wide use of behavior incident recording sheets
The Bayhawk “R” Bucks Distributing “R” Bucks is a positive and proactive initiative that recognizes, acknowledges, and rewards students for displaying modeled or desired behavior.

Goals for 2007-2008 • Our goal for this year is to reduce our number of office referrals by 25% (from 2178 to 700). • Our goal is to distribute 4,000 “R” Bucks to students displaying the Code of Conduct or desired behaviors.
Goals for 2007-2008 • Maintain and increase staff participation and relations • Reach the entire student population with the distribution of “R” Bucks • Increase students’ time in the classroom • Increase the number of positive to negative interactions - 5 to 1
Reinforcements • Intense instruction will take place the second day of school during homeroom. Use the teaching lessons to stimulate classroom discussions. • Visibly display the Soaring with Bayhawk Pride poster in every classroom and refer to it on a daily basis.
