Explaining the Goal • What would cause the community college transfer student to fail? • We brainstormed for these possible variables. • We decided upon 7 variables/hypotheses and formed 7 research teams. Speaker: Reena Gabriel

What are solutions from research and our common sense? • High Cost of Tuition: employer should pay for tuition or offer some sort of help, should be better state funding, federal programs designed to better fund college education, government should make education a priority, financial aid should have more money, loans more accessible, better interest rates. • Working too much/Poor Time Management Skills: better time management behavior: having a clear purpose, studying in a quiet place, don’t procrastinate, keep work at a minimal (part-time). • Transfer Shock: TAP program, see counselors, create transfer centers, outreach programs, allow students to know ahead of time GPA will drop, mentoring and tutoring, institutions should not hastily change requirements. What are solutions from research and our common sense? • Hate Crimes: report hate crimes to campus police & campus administrators, have open meeting with campus president and other senior administrators, have anti-defamation league present and offering workshops. • Lack of support: develop supportive friendship networks, teachers interact with students more and show interest in the students’ success, inspiration can come from family • Binge Drinking/Excessive Partying: increasing the cost of liquor license, reducing number of nearby liquor sellers, restricting hours of liquor sale, and responsible beverage service. • Health Problems: safe sex, talk about sex, parents being more aware of things students do, universal program for disabled students.
