Cuban Seismic Network Ing. Eduardo R. Diez Zaldívar. Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Sismológicas. CENAIS. Ministerio de Ciencia, Tecnología y Medio Ambiente. CITMA. CUBA. National Centre for Seismological Research (2010)
Introduction Cuba is part of the North American plate and lies on its boundary with the Caribbean one,
Introduction The beginning of the known seismic history of Cuba came with the Spanish settlements in the XVI century, and since that time several major and large earthquakes are reported in Greater Antilles. In the last five centuries, the eastern Cuban territory was affected by 26 earthquakes with intensity VI degrees or more, the most importance’s where 17 with VII degrees, 7 earthquakes with VIII degrees and 2 with IX degrees.
During May and June, 2010, was installed new equipments acquired in the People Republic of China. Mainly, was kept the idea of one national broad band network (7 stations), with 120 and 60 seconds BB seismometers, in order to record not only a local seismicity but also regional and tele-seismic earthquakes. Also, a short period radio telemetric network was installed for more specific studies with local seismicity and in the stations close to main fault system, in addiction with seismometer, we connected some strong motion accelerometers. Introduction
The new networks are connected to the central station using ADSL modems, radio telemetry and some satellite links, depending of connectivity, topography, distances and INTERNET facilities. Introduction
With automatic phase pick-up software and on-line epicenter location with magnitude calculation, it is possible to offer fast results with information about the energetic-spatially earthquake parameters. Also, all stations will be, in the next future, full open for data interchange, in order to collaborate with scientific and research institutions from neighboring countries.
