Why Study Pantomime? • It develops confidence and stage skills • Focus is on visibility, gesture, expression, absorption, and energy • There is no distraction from remembering lines, projection, and using props.
What will we be doing? • Learn how to communicate ideas and feelings • Learn the parts of the stage and basic stage skills • Learn how to stay focused on our task and not break character • Write simple scenes and scenarios to act out
How will we do this? • You will learn some basic terms and concepts about simple pantomime, parts of the stage, and how to move your body on the stage (Quiz) • As we learn these terms and concepts, you will need to take notes and participate in all activities (Participation, Notebook, Listening) • You will write simple scenes with a partner and act them out in front of class (Planning, Rehearsal, Performance, Reflection)
3 Qualities of Good Pantomime 1.) Consistency: Objects that are mimed must remain the same size. If your pantomime includes a steering wheel, it cannot shrink or expand!
3 Qualities of Good Pantomime 2.) Exaggerated resistance: If you are pushing a car, pulling a rope, picking a flower, sewing a button, or holding a feather, the resistance of person against object MUST be exaggerated and made “bigger” than in real life. Movement MUST be: SHARPER, DEFINITE, and BIGGER
3 Qualities of Good Pantomime 3.) Exaggerated expression and gesture: All movement and facial expression MUST be exaggerated, or made bigger than in real life.
In Conclusion Pantomime helps the actor become comfortable with how to use the body, face, and gestures when expressing ideas and emotions.
