Christopher Columbus-1492 • “Columbus sailed the ocean blue”… blah…blah….blah • Perfect timing??? • 1492- Biggie historical year!!.....And btw, • Columbus sailed the Atlantic!!! • 1492-Ferdinand and Isabella (cousins) marry… Why???? • try to unify Spain… • 1492- Spain defeats the Moors…Europe ousts Islam • 1492-Spanish Inquisition- • strengthen Catholic Church, persecute Jews, force conversions • Wanted to show Spanish strength and the glory of Catholicism, so they were willing to give some crazy Italian $$$$ • to try to find quicker route to Orient, go West to seek Northwest Passage • Columbus the brave genius? • Myth buster!!- most experienced sailors knew the world was round, they just thought it was smaller Aim: Was the origins of the US an accident or fate?

(Elizabeth I) • Stop English piracy of the seas (Drake) • “Divine wind” • English quicker, smaller ships were more maneuvarable, broadside attacks • Big Atlantic storm caused most of the Spanish ships to never make it around Ireland’s west coast • “Black Irish” Aim: Was the origins of the US an accident or fate?
