WHO ARE WE??? • Urban Area – City of Oakland • Alameda County, California • SSAI – Employment & Training Program within an Urban Setting • With culturally diversified communities • Serving mature workers 55 and over • Who are low income
OUTREACH AND RECRUITMENT STRATEGIES
OUTREACH STRATEGIES STEP 1 - Familiarize Yourself with Target Population • Oakland/Alameda County: Our seniors are low income populations consisting: • Large Asian Population (mono-lingual) • Chinese – Mandarin and Cantonese • Vietnamese • Large African-American Neighborhoods • Filipino – Tagalog Seniors
OUTREACH STRATEGIES Step 2 -Participate in Special Events • Job Fairs • Festivals on Aging (Wherever seniors gather) • Oakland Celebrates Older Americans Month – every May (over 2000 seniors) • Other collaborative events with community-based organizations • Relationships with our host agencies
OUTREACH STRATEGIES Step 3 – Build Outreach Collaborations • ASSETS EmploymentSpecialist Program Model • Senior Aides trained in Program Outreach & Intake Eligibility Process are stationed at the One-Stop Career Centers • Employment specialists make presentations at non-profit and public organizations • Community Liaison Senior Aides • Make presentations within our mono-lingual communities - • And their service providers
OUTREACH STRATEGIES Step 4 -Special Outreach Project • SSAI – US Census Data • Tweaked SSAI draft introductory letter • Created a “quick read” flyer • Mail the letter with an invitation to Informational Meeting • Established a call-in & walk-in list to keep track of responses • Sent follow-up information packet (see sample) • Did a follow-up call from contact sheet information Develop a Registration Sign-in sheet for the Information Meeting Keep track of Census Data impact
OUTREACH STRATEGIES Step 5 - Other outreach Activities • Advertisements: Phone Book – White Pages General Information • Flyers Placed in: • City Offices & 4 City administered Senior Centers • Host agency bulletin boards and other community based organizations • Public – Government Agencies • Radio – July 2007 – SSAI Sponsored Radio Campaign These activities generate: walk-ins call-ins word-of mouth info sharing
RECRUITMENT STRATEGIES Step 1 – Set-up Informational Meetings • This meeting is a direct result of our outreach efforts • Informational meetings held twice monthly on a set schedule • Establish a waiting list • 1. Use a contact spreadsheet • Personal data • Will Attend • Re-schedule • Unable to attend (eliminate the no interest)
RECRUITMENT STRATEGIES Step 2 Establish Purpose of the Informational Meeting • To capture further interest in the program • Show the SCSEP Video • Discuss program training features toward unsubsidized employment • Brief one-on-one meeting with prospective candidate • Basically – HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS!
