Light Microscope Parts and Functions
A. Eye piece Contains the ocular lens Magnification 10x
K. Arm Used to support the microscope when carried.
B. Revolving Nose Piece Holds the low and high-power objective lenses; can be rotated to change lenses so that a slide can be seen at different magnifications
C. Objective Lenses Magnification ranges from 4x to 40x
Scanning Objective Lens Total Magnification = Eyepiece x Objective Lens Total Magnification for scanning objective lens = Magnification 4x
Scanning Objective Lens Total Magnification = Eyepiece x Objective Lens Total Magnification for scanning objective lens = 40x Magnification 4x
Low Power Objective Lens Magnification 10x Total Magnification =
Low Power Objective Lens Magnification 10x Total Magnification = 100x
High Power Objective Lens Magnification 40x Total Magnification =
High Power Objective Lens Magnification 40x Total Magnification = 400x
E. Stage Supports the slide being viewed
D. Stage Clips Holds slide in place on stage
J. Coarse Adjustment Knob Moves the stage up and down for focusing an image
I. Fine Adjustment Knob Moves the stage slightly to increase the clarity of the image
H. Diaphragm Regulates the amount of light that enters the microscope
G. Base Supports the microscope
F. Light Source Projects light rays through the diaphragm, the slide to be seen, and the lenses
How to use a microscope • Total Magnification: Eye piece x objective lens = • Use the SCANNING objective lens first!!! • NEVER use the coarse adjustment knob when you’re on HIGH power!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
