iPad in Education • They are to be used in class and at home during the school year to replace textbooks, allow students to correspond with teachers and turn in papers and homework assignments, and preserve a record of student work in digital portfolios.
iPad at Defiance High School • Our students live in a digital world, altered by ever-changing technology. Whether they are described as "Digital Natives" or "21st Century Learners", we, as educators are well aware that students today are very different from past years. • This generation of 21st Century Learners can absorb a great deal of information at super-charged speed whether it is transmitted via a cell phone, television, the Internet, or MP3 player. Digital students are masters of varying types of technology. These students are always connected with their peers and the world through technology. • It is our vision at Defiance City Schools to incorporate these 21st Century Skills into our classrooms. An classroom environment that encourages collaboration and online learning will better engage our students, preparing them for the adult world. • We look forward to the challenge!
Cost of iPad 2 • $50.00 per year. • This agreement covers the iPad loaned to the student against all damage or loss over $50.00. Coverage is 24 hours per day. • This coverage is effective from the date this required form and premium payment are received by the school through the date on which the iPad is required to be returned in good order to the school. • Participation is totally voluntary. If a student does not participate they will not be allowed to take their iPad off school property.
Cost of iPad 2 Accessories (charger and case) and damages valued at less the $50.00 are NOT covered and are the sole responsibility of the student. Accidental Damage Vs Neglect/Abuse
Fee Waiver/Free and Reduced Lunch • These programs do not apply to the iPad Program. • Weekly, Monthly, or other payment options may be arranged by contacting Defiance High School Principal’s Office.
iPad Policies • There are four documents that must be read and/or signed before an iPad will be issued to a student. Those documents can be read below, The iPad Manual is a comprehensive overview of the iPad project that also includes these documents. 1. Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) - To be read by parents and students 2. AUP Acceptance Page - To be signed by parents and students 3. iPad Loan Agreement - To be read by parents and students 4. iPad Loan Agreement • One Apple iPad, charger and case are being lent to the Student and are in good working order. It is the Student's responsibility to care for the equipment and ensure that it is retained in a safe environment. • This equipment is, and at all times remains, the Property of Defiance City Schools and is herewith lent to the student for educational purposes only for the Academic School Year. • The student may not deface or destroy this property in any way. Inappropriate use of the machine may result in the student losing their right to use the iPad. The equipment will be returned when requested by Defiance City Schools, or sooner, if the student withdraws from Defiance High School prior to the end of the school year. • Identification labels have been placed on the iPad. These labels are not to be removed or modified. If they become damaged or missing contact tech support for replacements. Additional stickers, labels, tags, or markings of any kind are not to be added to the machine. • An email account will be available for each Student to use for appropriate academic communication with other students and staff members only. This email is for communication within the school district.
Parent Responsibilities • Supervise my child's use of the iPad at home; • Discuss our family's values and expectations regarding the use of the Internet and email at home; • Supervise my child's use of the Internet and email; • Will not attempt to repair the iPad, nor will I attempt clean it with anything other than a soft, dry cloth; • Report to the school any problems with the iPad I will not load or delete any software from the iPad; • Make sure my child recharges the iPad battery nightly; • Make sure my child brings the iPad to school every day; • Understand that if my child comes to school without the iPad, I may be called to bring it to school; • Agree to make sure that the iPad is returned to school when requested and upon my child's withdrawal from Defiance High School.
Student Responsibilities • Treat the iPad with care by not dropping it, getting it wet, leaving it outdoors, or using it with food or drink nearby; • Will not lend the iPad to anyone, not even my friends or siblings; it will stay in my possession at all times; • Will not load any software onto the iPad; • Will not remove programs or files from the iPad; • Will not give personal information when using the iPad; • Will bring the iPad to school everyday; • Agree that email (or any other computer communication) should be used only for appropriate, legitimate, and responsible communication • Will keep all accounts and passwords assigned to me secure, and will not share these with any other students; • Will not attempt to repair the iPad; • I will return the iPad when requested and upon my withdrawal from Defiance High School; • I will keep the iPad in the case at all times.
Network • iPads will be filtered at school • Pads will continue to block certain sites once they have left Defiance High School’s network.
Network • The iPad doesn’t have 3G, but having the internet at home is not necessary for the iPad to be functional. • For wireless at home, an access point must be purchased. • Available at Office Max, WalMart, Meijer

Questions & Answers • What if my child’s iPad gets stolen? If enrolled in the Technology Protection Fund, there will be a one time replacement. • What if my iPad is damaged and assessed for less that $50 to fix? That expense will not be covered by the Technology Protection Fund. Anything less that $50 will be billed to the student. • What if I have more than one child in the high school, Do I need to pay for more than one iPad? No, however iPad’s that are not covered by the protection fund will not be permitted to leave Defiance High School. • Will the iPad be like a cell phone where my child can text during school? No, must use the school issued protective cover. • Will traditional books still be used for instructional purposes?
