Flowers for Algernon Response and exploration
Summary Charlie Gordon is a mentally slow adult. Charlie isn’t the smartest, but he was living a happy life. He attends the Beekmen Center for Slow adults where his teacher, Alice Kinnian recommends him to a board of scientists to undergo an operation that will turn him into a genius. After the surgery, Charlie soaks up knowledge like a sponge. He begins to know things that college professors don’t even understand. Algernon is a test mouse that had the same surgery as Charlie, so when Algernon begins to behave erratically and dies, the scientists and Charlie get very worried. As Charlie’s mental health degrades, he enters a midlife crisis. Will Charlie survive?
