Ionic Compounds Unit 6: Nomenclature Mrs. Callender
Lesson Essential Questions: How do I write a formula for an ionic compound? How do I name an ionic compound?
Ex. BaO Writing Names of Binary Ionic Compounds Oxide Barium 1. Write the Name of the first element (cation) as is. You know it is a Binary Ionic Compound because it contains two (Bi) elements and one element is a metal and the other is a nonmetal. 2. Change the ending of the second element (anion) to –ide.
Ex. MgI2 Writing Names of Binary Ionic Compounds Iodide Magnesium 1. Write the Name of the first element (cation) as is. 2. Change the ending of the second element (anion) to –ide.
Ex. MgIO3 Writing Names of Ionic Compounds with Polyatomic Ions Iodate Magnesium 1. Write the Name of the first element (cation) as is. You know it is a Polyatomic Ionic Compound because it contains more than two elements. 2. Write the name of the anion.
Ex. NH4IO3 Writing Names of Ionic Compounds with Polyatomic Ions Iodate Ammonium 1. Write the Name of the first element (cation) as is. You know it is a Polyatomic Ionic Compound because it contains more than two elements. 2. Write the name of the anion.
Writing Ionic Formulas Ex. Sodium Iodide Write the formula for the anion and cation including the charges. 2. Check to see if the charges are balanced. +1-1= Net charge of zero which means it is balanced. Na+1 I-1
Writing Ionic Formulas Ex. Barium Chloride Write the formula for the anion and cation including the charges. 2. Check to see if the charges are balanced. +2-1= Net charge of +1 which means it is NOT balanced and will need a subscript. Ba+2 Cl-1 BaCl2 Not Balanced
What does the subscript mean? In review: remember Barium has 2 valence e- and chlorine has 7 valence e- Since Barium has two bonding sites it can have two anions bonded to it becoming…. BaCl2 Ba Cl Cl
Writing Ionic Formulas Another way of writing a formula is by crisscrossing the charges. BaCl2 Ba +2 Cl -1 1 2
Writing Ionic Formulas Ex. Barium Nitrate Write the formula for the anion and cation including the charges. 2. Check to see if the charges are balanced. +2-1= Net charge of +1 which means it is NOT balanced and will need a subscript and parenthesis. Ba+2 NO3-1 Ba(NO3)2 2 Not Balanced
Writing Ionic Formulas Ex. Ammonium Sulfate Write the formula for the anion and cation including the charges. 2. Check to see if the charges are balanced. +1-2= Net charge of -1 which means it is NOT balanced and will need a subscript and parenthesis. SO4-2 NH4+1 (NH4)2SO4 2 Not Balanced
Writing Ionic Formulas Ex. Magnesium Carbonate Write the formula for the anion and cation including the charges. 2. Check to see if the charges are balanced. MgCO3 CO3-2 Mg+2 They are Balanced
