Lenin and the Bolsheviks A. Lenin’s View of Marx • Lenin had to adapt Marx’s ideas to fit the Russian society. • Created an elite group to lead the revolution – Bolsheviks. • Thought revolution must be violent • Germany smuggles Lenin back to Russia in 1917
Bolsheviks in Power • Farmland distributed among peasants • Factory control given to workers • 1918 – Treaty of Brest Litovsk (Russia surrendered a large part of its territory to Germany and allies) • Some Russians objected – leaves to civil war
Civil War (1918-1920) • Reds (Bolsheviks) vs. Whites • Whites = 3 groups • Supported czar • Wanted democratic gov. • Socialists who opposed Lenins’s style of so. • 14 million Russians killed • Reds win
RESTORING ORDER • War and revolution = destroyed Russian economy • Lenin allowed for SMALL SCALE capitalism – Marxism that works for Russia. State control of • banks, large industry and foreign trade. Small privately owned businesses allowed to open. • Peasants held onto small plots of land and were allowed to sell their surplus crops for profit. • Helped rebuild the soviet economy and end armed rebellion.
Stalin Takes Over • When Lenin died there was a huge struggle to determine who would take over • Leon Trotsky – A loyal supporter of Lenin who worked with Lenin side by side during the revolution. • Joseph Stalin – A ruthless power merchant who would kill anyone in his path. Preview for tomorrow
Trotsky and Stalin engaged in a fierce fight to gain control. • Stalin worked behind the scenes to create powerful alliances within the Communist party to isolate Trotsky • Trotsky was eventually assassinated in Mexico. Preview for tomorrow
