The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens Habit 1: Be proactive Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind Habit 3: Put First Things First Habit 4: Think Win-Win Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood Habit 6: Synergize Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw
Get in the Habit “We first make our habits, then our habits make us.” English Poet Definition: Habits are things we do repeatedly. Activity: Fold your arms. Now try folding your arms the opposite way. How does that feel?
Habit #1: Be Proactive Habit 1: is the key to unlocking all the other habits and that’s why it comes first. It says: • I am the Force • I am the Captain of my Life • I can choose my attitude • I am responsible for my own happiness (or unhappiness). • I am in the driver’s seat of my destiny (not a passenger).
Proactive Vs. Reactive • Proactive people make choices based on values. • Reactive people make choices based on impulse
Proactive Vs. Reactive Proactive Language • I’ll do it. • I can do better than that • Let’s look at all our options • I choose to.. • There’s gotta be a way • I’m not going to let your bad mood rub off on me. • Reactive Language • I’ll try • That’s just the way I am • I have to • I can’t • You ruined my day
Proactive Vs. Reactive Scenario #1: You overhear your best friend bad-mouthing you in front of a group. She doesn’t know you overheard the conversation. Just five minutes ago, this same friend was sweet-talking you to your face. You feel hurt and betrayed.
Proactive Vs. Reactive • Reactive Choices • Forgive her • Confront her and calmly share how you feel • Ignore it and give her a second chance Proactive Choices • Tell her off, then hit her • Go into a deep depression • Decide she’s a two-faced liar and give her the silent treatment for 2 months • Spread vicious rumors about her
Proactive Vs. Reactive Scenario #2: You have been working at your job in the store for over a year now and have been extremely committed and dependable. Three months ago, a new employee joined the crew. Recently, he was given the coveted Saturday afternoon shift, the shift you were hoping for.
Proactive Vs. Reactive • Reactive Choices • Complain to everyone you know • Scrutinize the new employee to find his weakness • Become convinced that your supervisor is out to get you • Begin to slack off while working your shift Proactive Choices • Talk with your supervisor • Continue to be a hard-working employee • Learn what you can do to improve • If necessary, begin looking for a new job
The Victimitis Virus“People infected with Victimitis think that everyone has it in for them and the world owes them something” Reactive People: • Are Easily Offended • Blame Others • Get Angry and Say things they Regret • Change only when they have to • Whine and Complain • Wait for things to happen
Proactive People are a Different Breed!! Proactive people: • Are not easily offended • Take responsibility for their choices • Think before they act • Bounce back when something bad happens • Always find a way to “Make it Happen” • Focus on things they can do something about and don’t worry about things they can’t
Control Vs. No-Control Circle of No Control Circle of Control Color of Skin Weather Past Mistakes Cost of Tuition Other people’s thoughts & actions Who will win the word series Choices Responses Ourselves Attitudes Parents Rude Comments Location of Birth
Turning Setbacks into Triumphs • Life can deal us a bad hand and it’s up to us to control how we respond. • “It’s not what happens to you in life, it’s what you do about it.” • “So much has been given to me. I have no time to ponder that which has been denied.” – Helen Keller
Develop a “Can-Do” Attitude • Being proactive really means two things: • Taking Responsibility for your life • Developing a “Can-Do Attitude • Can-Do People • Take initiative to “make it happen” • Think about Solutions & Options • Act • No-Can-Do People • Wait for Something to happen to them • Think about problems & barriers • Are acted upon
“Just Push Pause” • Sometimes life is moving so fast that we instantly react to everything out of sheer habit. • To make smarter decisions: • Pause • Get Control • Think about how to Respond
4 Human Tools • Self Awareness • I can stand apart from myself and observe my thoughts & actions. • Conscience • I can listen to my inner voice to know right from wrong. • Imagination: • I can envision new possibilities • Willpower: • I have the power to choose.
Be Proactive • Application Activity: • Select a problem from your work or personal life that is frustrating to you. • Determine whether it is a direct, indirect, or no control problem. • Identify the first step you can take in your Circle of Influence to solve it and then take that step.
