  1. Grammar Notes Parts of Speech Directions: Copy text that is brown and black. The red text is directions for you to follow.

  2. Nouns • A noun is a person, place, thing, or idea. • Persons-ninja, Sensei, Tommy • Places-Albuquerque, dojo • Things-katana, Internet • Ideas-justice, love

  3. Abstract Nouns • Name ideas-use when referring to characteristics, qualities, feelings • courage • self-discipline • freedom • List two more on your paper. Do it now.

  4. Concrete Nouns • Name things you can see, hear, smell, taste, or touch. • Write down three concrete nouns. Do it now.

  5. Proper Nouns • Name specific persons, places, things. or ideas. Always capitalize these! • Japan • Write down two more. Do it now. Capitalize!

  6. Common Nouns • Are not specific, so do not capitalize. • Write two down. Do it now.

  7. Collective Nouns • Name a group or people or things • family • herd • clan • school of fish

  8. Compound Nouns • Consist of two or more words • New Mexico • high school • martial arts • one-third
