Changing Faces of America: Multiculturalism and Identity • Jill Bruellman • 10th Annual American Studies Symposium • Issyk-Kul, Kyrgyzstan • May 19, 2013
Overview • Critical thinking and the United States • Multiculturalism and U.S. Society • Implications
What is critical thinking? • Ennis defines critical thinking as: • Well-informed and reflective decision making • Reasonable, reflective thinking focused on deciding on what to think and do • Does not mean negative thinking
No Child Left Behind All Critical Thinking Skills Left Behind
Common Core • 21st Century Learners • Succeed in a Global Economy • Higher Knowledge and Thinking Skills
Shifts in English Language Arts • Reading and writing integration • Evidence-based • Complex texts with scaffolding • Digital literacy • Academic vocabulary
Multicultural Education • In her book, Affirming Diversity: The Sociopolitical Context of Multicultural Education (1992), Sonia Nieto writes about: • Failure of multicultural education • “Taco Tuesday” • Lack of dialogue • Surface level
Multicultural Education • Nieto defines multiculturalism as: • Antiracist • Important for all students • Process • Critical pedagogy
Multicultural Education • “Our world is becoming more interdependent. Students have to understand their role in a global society and not simply in a nation. Multicultural education, therefore, is a process that goes beyond the changing demographics in a particular country. It is more effective education for a changing world.” (Nieto 222)
Multicultural Identity Worksheet • 1. Share a story about a time you were especially proud to identify with one of the descriptors you used above. • 2. Share a story about a time it was especially painful to be identified with one of your identifiers or descriptors. • I am (a/an) _____________________ but I am NOT (a/an)_____________________.
Out-group Homogeneity Effect • We view other cultures in an oversimplified manner, lump differences into exaggerated categories, and view every person in a culture possessing this characteristic • Stereotypes assign group characteristics to individuals purely based on their cultural membership
Ingroup Heterogeneity Effect • In contrast, we view ourselves as individuals and not sharing all the characteristics of the groups • Stereotypes become a way of managing the diversity around us, but they may be a way of denying individuality
Implications for American Studies in Kyrgyzstan • Communities, schools, colleges, universities and governments need to invest in exchange opportunities • Individuals need to continue to seek out opportunities • Emphasis must be placed on critical thinking and multiculturalism
