  2. OBJECTIVES • To present the Behavioral Assessment Scale for Intercultural Competence (BASIC) as a tool that can be used to become more interculturally competent. • To present description, interpretation, and evaluation as a tool that can be used to become more interculturally competent.

  3. OBJECTIVES • To describe some of the outcomes of intercultural contact for people and cultures. • To define acculturation and its many related terms. • To explain the process of acculturation. • To discuss some of the ethical dilemmas in intercultural communication.

  4. OBJECTIVES • To offer some concluding remarks about the development of intercultural communication competence.

  5. Basic Tools for Improving Intercultural Competence • The BASICs of intercultural competence is an eight-item behavioral assessment scale that is based on the idea that a person’s behaviors are what others use to determine intercultural competence.

  6. Basic Tools for Improving Intercultural Competence 1. Displays of respect are present, but shown differently in every culture. 2. Orientation to knowledge refers to the terms people use to explain themselves and the world. 3. Empathy is to behave as if one understands the world as others do. 4. Interaction management refers to the skills necessary to maintain a conversation.

  7. Basic Tools for Improving Intercultural Competence 5. Task-role behavior refers to those skills that contribute to a group’s performance. 6. Relational role behavior deals with efforts to build and maintain personal relationships. 7. Tolerance for ambiguity refers to the extent to which an individual can deal with unpredictability and uncertainty. 8. Interaction posture focuses on the ability to respond to others in a way that is not judgmental.
