Day Three Problems: Questions 7-12 (Pink Blocks) • Directions: • Go through each of the slides to check your answers for this part of the homework. • Make sure that you have all the correct notations, as this will be the expectation on your assessment. • You may also want to practice writing explanations of your work. Be able to show equivalency between the ratio given and the ratio created! • You should have examples in your notes that we completed in class. Also refer back to the “ACES” strategy. • Come to class prepared with any questions you may have, as I will give you the opportunity to ask questions about this assignment prior to taking the assessment.
7) The concession stand at the football game sold hot dogs and Chick-fil-a sandwiches in the ratio of 7:4. They sold 63 more hot dogs than Chick-fil-A chicken sandwiches. What was the total number of hot dogs and Chick-fil-a sandwiches sold? Hot Dogs Chicken Sandwiches There were 231 hot dogs and chicken sandwiches sold. The ratio is31 7:4. There are three more thinking blocks for hot dogs than chx. Sandwiches. Since there were 63 more hot dogs sold, you divide that by 3. 63/3 = 21. Each block has a value of 21. 21 x 4 = 84 chicken sandwiches 21 x 7 = 147 hot dogs 84 + 147 = 231 The ratio 7:4 = 147:84 ?
8) Maddie and Erin collected seashells at the beach. Maddie picked up 5 shells for every 3 that Erin picked up. Together they picked up 128 shells. How many were Erin’s? Maddie 128 Erin ? Erin collected 48 shells. 128/8 = 16; each block has a value of 16 16 x 3 = 48, so Erin collected 48 shells. The ration 5:3 = 80:48
9) The ratio of squirrels to chipmunks in my back yard is 7:2. There are 72 squirrels and chipmunks living there. How many squirrels live in my back yard? ? Squirrels Chipmunks There are 56 squirrels in my back yard. 72/9 = 8, so each block has a value of 8. 8 x 2 = 16 chipmunks 8 x 7 = 56 squirrels 16 chipmunks + 56 squirrels = 72 chipmunks and squirrels Squirrels to Chipmunks = 7 to 2 = 56 to 16 72
10) Mario and Luigi were selling coupon books for the Video Game Club fundraiser. Apparently Mario is a much better salesperson, because he sold 4 times as many coupon books as Luigi. If Luigi sold 12 fewer coupon books than Mario, what was the total number of coupon books that the two boys sold? Mario ? Luigi Mario and Luigi sold a total of 20 coupon books. Since Mario sold 4 times as many coupon books as Luigi, this can be represented by the ratio 4 to 1. Luigi sold 12 fewer coupon books than Mario. There are three more blocks for Mario than Luigi, so 12/3 = 4. Each block has a value of 4. Mario to Luigi = 4 to 1 = 16 to 4
11) Amanda was playing outside and got bitten by mosquitos. She has 3 bites on her legs for every 2 bites on her arms. Thankfully, they didn’t bite her anywhere else! If her legs have 4 more bites than her arms, how many mosquito bites did Amanda get? Legs ? Arms Amanda had a total of 20 mosquito bites. Since she had 4 more bites on her legs than arms, and there is one more block represented, then each block must have a value of 4. 4 x 2 = 8 4 x 3 = 12 8 + 12 = 20 bites The ratio 3:2 = 12: 8
12) James’s grandmother gave him money for his birthday. James decided to save some of it and spend the rest, in the ratio of 3:5. He is planning to save $20 less than he is going to spend. How much money did James’s grandmother give him? Save ? Spend James’s grandmother gave him $80. James will save 20 less than he will spend. Since there are two less blocks then each block must represent a value of 10 (10 + 10 = 20). 10 x 3 = $30 10 x 5 = $50 $30 + $50 = $80 The ratio 3:5 = 30: 50
