  2. Please !!!!! Write your child’s name in all their clothing, even coats. This can help your child find their own clothes. Lost property is in the bin outside Ladybirds’ classroom.

  3. New things in Reception • The only jewellery allowed in school is a watch • Reward assemblies • Dinner money payment in envelopes with name on. Changing from packed lunch to school dinner at the end of the week. • Look at www.windynookprimary.org for more information. • Children are dismissed one by one at the end of the day.

  4. Why Read Write Inc Phonics? • Tried and tested over many years • Systematic and structured • Early success in reading • Training and ongoing staff development

  5. How does it work? Children: • Learn 44 sounds and matching letters/letter groups • Learn to blend sounds to read words • Read lots of specially written books This is decoding

  6. How does it work? Children: • Talk a lot about what they have read to show they understand • Listen to and discuss other ideas to deepen understanding This is comprehending

  7. Children learn a simple code first

  9. Fred... • Fred helps children learn to read Fred can only talk in sounds... (Fred can only say c_a_t, he can’t say cat) We call this Fred Talk

  10. Fred... • Fred helps children learn to spell as well! Children convert words into sounds They press the sounds they hear on to their fingers... We call this Fred Fingers

What’s new or different? • New reading books for the classroom and to read at home. • Sounds and letters are introduced systematically and at a fast pace. • Children are only asked to blend words with sounds they know. • When children bring home a Ditty or storybook they will have already practised it at school. • Children are taught to use sounds to decode words.

  13. And... • By reading to your child lots of lovely stories and asking lots of questions! Use these prompts to help you: What is that character thinking? What do you think happens next? What is happening? What is the character saying? What do you think that character is feeling now?

  15. Mathematics • Problem solving, practical work, especially outdoors. • Children will meet counting and number in play and games, rather than 2+3=5 • Support at home through games, e.g. snakes and ladders, snap, dominoes, playing cards.
