Fundamentals of Purity and Prayer Lecture 4 February 16, 2014
Mustahabb of Wudu • Perform wudu before start of prayer time • Face the Qiblah • Sit in an elevated place • Perform dhikr/du’a during wudu • Mentioning name of Allah when washing each limb • Sunnahdu’as • Avoid splashes of used water • Use right hand to take water into mouth and nose • And left hand to clean nose • Drink remaining water of wudu • Beginning from tips of fingers and toes when washing arms/feet • Beginning from front of head when wiping
Mustahabb of Wudu • Recite two declarations of faith after completing wudu • Recite the du’a after wudu • “Oh Allah make me of those who repent and of those maintain purity.” (Tirmidhi)
Makruhat of Wudu • Wasting water • Using too little water • Splashing the face (or other limbs) with water • Speaking – other than dhikr or du’a • Having someone else assist without a valid excuse
Conditions of Responsibility • The conditions of being legally responsible to perform wudu are: • Islam • Puberty • Sanity • To be in a state of ritual impurity • Minor • Access to pure water • Intention to perform an act which requires wudu • Mandatory near the end of the prayer time
Ritual Impurity • Ritual impurity (hadath) can be divided into 2 types: • Minor ritual impurity (hadath al-asghar) • Results from those acts which break wudu • Is uplifted by performing wudu • Major ritual impurity (hadath al-akbar) • Results from those acts which necessitate making ghusl (a ritual bath) • Is uplifted by performing ghusl
Categories of Wudu Fard, Wajiband Mustahabb
When Wudu is Fard • Wudu is fard for a person in state of minor ritual impurity who intends to: • Perform salah • Fard, wajib, sunnah or naflsalah • Perform sajdahtilawah (prostration of recitation) • Touch the Qur’an • Including cover, pages and words • Or a single verse when not in mushaf • Mandatory near the end of prayer time, regardless if intention to pray or not
When Wudu is Wajib • Wudu is wajib for a person in state of minor ritual impurity who intends to: • Perform tawaf of the Kabah
When Wudu is Mustahabb • Wudu is mustahabb: • Before touching books of religious knowledge – out of respect • To renew one’s wudu for another prayer • To avoid differences among the 4 schools of thought • E.g. touching a woman, etc. • Before sleeping • After waking up from sleep • After every sin • After laughing out loud • Outside of prayer
Nullifiers of Wudu • Anything which exits from the front or pack passage of the private parts • Impurity that flows from other than the two openings • Blood and pus • Bleeding from mouth • Vomiting at least a mouthful • Sleeping in position where one’s bottom is not firmly planted on the ground • Lying down, one’s side, etc. • Loss of consciousness
Nullifiers of Wudu • Insanity • Intoxication • Laughing out loud by an adult during salah • Direct contact between private parts of 2 individuals • Without barrier If any of these actions occur while making wudu • Previous steps become invalidated • Wudu must be restarted
Non-Nullifiers • Touching filth • E.g. changing a diaper • Touching or looking at one’s private parts • Sleeping while bottom is planted on ground Certainty vs Doubt • Wudu is broken only when one is certain an act which nullifies wudu occurred • Doubt can never remove certainty
