The Baltic University Programme as a resource to participating universities Prof. Dr. Dr.h.c. Walter Leal Filho TUHH/TuTech, Hamburg BUP Rectors Conference Uppsala 19-20 October 2006
Outline • The Baltic University Programme across the region • Benefits to participant universities in research, teaching and extension • The BUP Network as a player in EU Programmes and projects • How can you help? BUP Rectors Conference Uppsala 19-20 October 2006
The Baltic University Programme across the region • BUP is the world´s largest university network • BUP has around 200 universities and covers the whole Baltic region • The coverage is from Denmark/Germany up to NW Russia (show map) • It encompasses many types of universities (Technical, Agricultural, etc). BUP Rectors Conference Uppsala 19-20 October 2006
Benefits to participant universities in research, teaching and extension • Improvement in the quality of teaching (booklets) • Complements for teaching for BSc, MSc and PhD training • Opportunities for international research projects • Opportunities for students to gather international experience beyond usual means. BUP Rectors Conference Uppsala 19-20 October 2006
The BUP Network as a player in EU Programmes and projects • The Network is strong and active • Its geographical coverage means it is an attractive partner for projects • It can cover many themes (ecology, chemistry, physics, planning, architecture, etc) • It can attract many EU projects (e.g. BUUF, Coastman, Watersketch, ASTRA) (show projects!) • It opens the way for member universities to be more involved in EU programmes (e.g. Socrates, Leonardo, etc). BUP Rectors Conference Uppsala 19-20 October 2006
How can you as Rectors help? • Support to your national centres • Support the idea of the creation of a Foundation to oversee the work of the Baltic University Programme (BUP Foundation) • Meet at regular intervals to review progresses by means of a “Baltic University Programme Rectors Meeting” (2 years?). BUP Rectors Conference Uppsala 19-20 October 2006
Our message and pledge: help BUP to help your university to become more international, with more projects, events, students interaction and scientific publications. The income is a nice complement to tight budgets! BUP Rectors Conference Uppsala 19-20 October 2006
