General Facts • There are about 5,000 animal shelters in America. • More than 25% of shelter dogs are purebred. • Every year 3-4 million dogs and cats are euthanized in animal shelters. • About 5 out of every 10 dogs sent to an animal shelter will be euthanized. • More than 20% of shelter dogs are brought in by owners who adopted from an animal shelter.   3. How Animal Shelters Work • Animal shelters are filled with unwanted pets. • Majority of the animals are dogs and cats. • Animal shelters provide a safe place for animals to live for a limited time. • Volunteers take care of the animals and try to find them a home. • Animal shelters are either nonprofit, run by the government’s animal control, and some are run independently.   5. Humane Society of the United States • HSUS is Americas largest and the most effective animal protections organization. • They do a lot of advocating for new laws to protect animals. • They provide animal rescue and emergency response. (Watson)

Pet Overpopulation • When people do not spay and neuter their pets that creates a lot of unwanted companions (Brewster). • Puppy mills also produce a mass amount of puppies and they are sold online or in pet stores. Which leads to more overpopulation (ASPCA). • The pet overpopulation leaves animal shelters at maximum capacity which results in 3-4 million dogs being euthanized every year (Brewster).

  8. No-Kill Shelters • These shelters do not euthanize unless the animal is very ill. • They accept the dogs into their shelters where they are taken care of and do not have a time limit on their lives. • No-Kill shelters are run as non-profit organizations and the rely entirely on donations and the help from their volunteers.
