Involuntary Mobilization Deferment All Veteran personnel who affiliate SELRES within 6 months (183 days) of release from active duty qualify for a 2-year deferment from involuntary mobilization Those who join the SELRES 7 to 12 months after leaving active duty are eligible for a 1-year deferment

  6. Get a bonus for joining the SELRES! Eligible members are entitled to an affiliation bonus in exchange for a 3-year SELRES commitment Refer to NAVADMIN 165/13 (Officers) or NAVADMIN 301/13 (Enlisted) for more specifics

Need 50 minimum points to have a qualifying year based on member’s anniversary date* (must earn 35 points annually + 15 gratuitous points) Can obtain a maximum total of 130 inactive duty points per FY via drills…equal to 4 months on AD! Certain types of drills, e.g., funeral honors, will count in addition to the 130 Estimate retirement using online calculator *check ARPR/ASOSH in Bupers Online for anniversary date MUST EARN 20 QUALIFYING YEARS COMBINED ACTIVE AND RESERVE

  8. How Do SELRES Earn Retirement Points? 1 day on active duty = 1 point 1 drill period (4 hrs) = 1 point (4 in a weekend) 15 points a year for just being a Reservist Talk with a CTO TA to figure out individual points and how to utilize a retirement calculator

Career Opportunities: Civilian & Military • Affiliation with the Navy Reserve can lead to additional civilian career opportunities: • Network with members who already have successful civilian careers • “Built-in” group of advocates/references • Establish civilian career by taking advantage of a 2-year involuntary mobilization deferment • Volunteer mobilization/recall opportunities available which lower retirement age from 60 to as low as 50

  11. Post 911 GI-Bill Transferability • Service members eligible for the Post-9/11 GI-Bill program will be able to transfer unused educational entitlement to their eligible dependents. The transferability option must be elected while actively serving (AD or SELRES) with no breaks in active participation* *active participation = beginning SELRES the day following AD separation • Must fulfill required 4-year obligation with NO breaks in active participation or risk breaking contract and becoming ineligible Post-9/11 GI-Bill NPC Site NAVADMIN 203/09 GI-Bill Transferability Transfer of Post-9/11 GI-Bill Benefits to Dependents

  13. Reserve Pay • Each monthly drill (IDT)= 4 hours or 1 point, SELRES typically earn 4 pts/month or 48 pts (24 days) per fiscal year • Each annual training (AT) day = 1 point per day. Members must perform at least 12 days of AT during the fiscal year 2014 Pay Charts

  14. Civilian Pay vs. Reserve Pay(What you get for your time) A Drilling LT with 6 yrs of service working 36 days/year earns $10,831 annually ($38/hour) plus a retirement at age 60! Justification: 36 days/year from the below: 24 drill days (48 drills ) + 12 annual training days = 36 days/year to secure retirement pay and medical benefits for member and family Assumption: LT comes off AD with 6 yrs 36 days x 14 years = 504 days, which equates to 2 years of total work to earn a retirement worth more than $1 million* *assuming member retires as a Commander (O-5) and collects retirement benefits from age 60 to 80

How easy is it to find a unit and work with my schedule? • There are Navy Operational Support Centers (NOSCs) and Reserve units throughout the country • If it is over 50 miles from a member’s home, the Navy pays for berthing during drill weekend • Flex drills/rescheduled drills are also available, which allows the Reservist to perform duties on a schedule that meets the needs of the Navy and the Reservist

What kind of work is there? • Officers will be given leadership assignments much like on AD and train with the supported command, alongside their AD counterparts: • Division Officer Tour • Department Head Tour • Command Tour (CO/XO) • Officers may work in their specialized designator using their specific warfare training, or they may fill a non-warfare specific job that allows a new experience and focus more on staff work, research, ground job experience, etc.
