5 Steps to Earn and Maintain an ASHRAE Certification Step 1 Read the Guidebook: It contains important information related to the examination, including eligibility requirements. Example of HBDP Eligibility Requirements Any individual who meets one of the following combinations of academic and work experience criteria will be eligible to take the HBDP certification examination. • Government-issued license as a professional engineer OR • Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field from an accredited institution of higher learning and a minimum of 5 years’ experience in HVAC&R design OR • Associate’s degree or Technical degree or certificate in design, construction, or a related field from an accredited institution of higher learning and a minimum of 7 years’ experience in HVAC&R design OR • High School diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 7 years’ experience in HVAC&R design
Step 2 Complete the Application: Complete the online application form at www.ashrae.org/certification or call customer service at 1-800-527-4724 (US and Canada) or 404-636-8400 (Worldwide) Example of Application
Step 3 Schedule an Examination: Click on the Testing Centers Worldwide link under the appropriate certification at www.ashrae.org/certification. Examinations are offered on computer at nearly 200 testing centers. The examinations are between 2 – 2½ hours and have 115 multiple choice questions. Centers currently located in Manila, Singapore, Taipei and Tokyo.
Step 4 Review Available Resources: Each certification guidebook identifies available resources that may help candidates gain an understanding of the body of knowledge the examination tests. Available resources include ASHRAE-owned and non-ASHRAE owned publications and courses. Some ASHRAE members pass the examination from their working knowledge and familiarity with ASHRAE Standards and Publications.
Healthcare Facility Design Professional Designed and developed in close collaboration with the American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE) of the American Hospital Association. Purpose of program: To encourage understanding and knowledge of the impact of medical issues and facility operations on HVAC&R design in healthcare facilities. Purpose of examination: To assess an individual’s understanding of medical terminology and facility operations as they apply to HVAC&R design.
Healthcare Facility Design Professional Any individual who meets one of the following combinations of academic and work experience criteria will be eligible to take the examination for the HFDP certification. • Government-issued license as a professional engineer and a minimum of 2 years’ experience in healthcare HVAC&R design OR • Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field from an accredited institution of higher learning and a minimum of 5 years’ experience in HVAC&R design, including a minimum of 2 years’ experience in healthcare HVAC&R design OR • Associate’s degree or Technical degree or certificate in design, construction, or a related field from an accredited institution of higher learning and a minimum of 7 years’ experience in HVAC&R design, including a minimum of 3 years’ experience in healthcare HVAC&R design OR • High School diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 10 years’ experience in HVAC&R design, including a minimum of 7 years’ experience in healthcare HVAC&R design
High-Performance Building Design Professional Designed and developed with input from USGBC and GBI and in collaboration with MCAA and IESNA. Purpose of program: To encourage understanding and knowledge of the impact of sustainability issues and facility operations on HVAC&R design. Purpose of examination: To assess an individual’s understanding and knowledge of how HVAC&R design is integrated into high performing buildings to achieve the overall goal of sustainability.
Operations & Performance Management Professional Designed and developed in close collaboration with APPA (organization for educational facilities management) and US General Services Administration (GSA). Candidates who earn the OPMP certification will have demonstrated a well-rounded understanding and knowledge of the management of facility operations and maintenance and their impact on HVAC&R systems' performance.
Step 5 Renew Your Certification: Each certification holder must earn 45 ASHRAE Continuing Education units (ACEs) during the three year period following initial certification or the last renewal.
