  1. 7th Grade English Class Policies Welcome from Mrs. Read Grade 7 2012-2013 School Year Student and Parents, please read this entire document (both sides). Welcome to 7th grade Language Arts. I am so excited about this year. My philosophy on education is that when the teacher can facilitate a combination of fun and academic rigor, true learning occurs. We are going to learn our hearts out this year! We will be covering many exciting topics which will include: Nonfiction, Poetry, Fiction, Drama, Informational Texts, Making Connections, and Research. 7th graders will take both Reading and Writing STAAR tests this year. I invite you to contact me any time (contact information is on the back of this sheet). I also encourage you to visit my website. You can access this website by going to the LWISD website, clicking on Collins Middle School, and then Staff. Thank you. Materials Needed • 5 Subject Notebook • Notebook Paper • Writing Utensils • Dictionary and Thesaurus for home use (may use from internet if connection is accessible to student) Please note that other supplies may be needed throughout the school year for different class activities. I will let students know as far in advance as possible. The Notebook Much of the work that students Complete this year will be done in the Required 5 Subject Notebook. This can be a place that parents can get I information about what the student is learning in English/Language Arts. It is necessary that students keep their notebooks up to date and that the notebooks are brought to class EVERY DAY! 1. Fill out form below. 2. Detach. 3. Return form by 8/26/11. 4. 2. Attendance • If a student is absent from class, it is the student’s responsibility to get and make up any missed work. • Students will check the Absence Binder in my classroom for any work missed. • If a student is turning in an assignment late due to absence, the student must label the assignment ABSENT or receive late credit. • Late Work • It is imperative that students complete and • turn in work timely. • The highest grade a student can receive for • an assignment turned in late will be a 70%. Independent Reading Students will be required to read independently every day this year! Students will be required to read a minimum of 25 books (200 pages; on grade level) during the course of the school year. Research shows that this means students will read approximately 1 million words . This alone is proven to raise test scores. Students will be required to track both the time that they read via a weekly Reading Log and the books that they read on a Reading Tracker. Books for the Material for the Reading Log can include the books on the tracker, magazines, books they read to their siblings, materials (such as notes) for other classes, articles on the web. Parent signatures will be required on he Weekly Reading Log (due on Fridays) and the Reading Tracker once per six weeks. Note to Parents We, parent/s and teacher, are most powerful when we work together. My goal is to ensure that I support you and your child with regards to your child’s success and growth. Please contact me if you any concerns, issues, questions… I look forward to working with you. I know this is going to be an exciting year. I can’t wait to partner with you.
