OUR GOALS FOR THIS YEAR • Develop responsibility • Develop independence • Learn to work cooperatively in various groups • Develop each student’s ability to think and solve problems on his/her own • Promote personal creativity while appreciating others • Become active learners Our school motto is: • “We are responsible, respectful, and resolve our differences” Our class motto is: • “We LOVE to Learn”

  3. Our Daily Schedule MONDAY TUESDAY WEDNESDAY THURSDAY FRIDAY Math Club- Tuesdays and Thursday 7:30-7:50 am

  4. ACADEMIC EXPECTATIONS • I have high expectations for your child. Students are responsible for knowing the procedures of the class so that we may spend the greatest possible amount of time on task and actively learning. I set goals for each student and each student sets goals for themselves. We learn and practice the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Students to enable us to reach our goals. • Your child will receive letter grades, as well as rubric scores. All work must be neat and well thought-out. As I have explained to the students, school IS their job, and I expect them to do their best and take ownership of their actions (in other words—BE RESPONSIBLE). Each student has a copy of the grading scale in his/her binder.

Some basic questions…WHAT ABOUT GRADES, PROGRESS REPORTS AND CONFERENCES? • Students receive both letter grades and rubric scores • Rubric scores reflect a student's knowledge of a particular standard • Letter grades reflect an overall knowledge of a subject • Grades are posted online • Your code is your child's school 7 digit ID number. • Progress Reports will be given mid-trimester. • Report cards conferences are Nov 14-18 & March 12-16 • If you would like to meet with me before the November conference, please contact me.

  10. WHAT ABOUT HOMEWORK, MISSING WORK, & ABSENCES? The purpose of homework is to: • Reinforce concepts and skills presented in class • To develop responsibility • Provide time for additional practice • Homework • Approximately 50 minutes of nightly (does not include reading time). • Due the next day unless specified. • 1-day grace period for late homework during the first trimester • Missing Work • Student agendas list all work for each day, including homework • Students writes late assignments in the agenda, I may email parents to notify • check online for missing work- • Illness • You may call the school office in the morning for work • Can be picked up after 3:00 • Independent Study • If child will be missing school (five days or more) • You may request Independent study for school credit • Please remember, however, that some of the greatest learning moments happen in the classroom and cannot be duplicated. Some activities cannot be made up.

WHAT ABOUT FAMILY LIFE? • Yes • Parental permission is required • As with all student materials, the family life video and materials will be available for preview at the district office • Family Life is usually taught in the spring. WHAT ABOUT FIELD TRIPS? • Here is a list of our proposed field trips this year: • Discovery Museum- Challenger • In-Class presentations • CSUS Aquatic Center • End-Of-year BBQ at the park See the 5th grade Fundraiser Flyer for info regarding next year WHAT ABOUT DISCIPLINE? • Clear expectations for greatest amount of learning time • Work Ethic Rubric • Positive reinforcement • Notes from me---GOOD!!) • Note from your child….

  12. WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP MY CHILD AT HOME THIS YEAR? • Go over the Agenda with your child nightly. • Give your child a spelling practice test on Wednesday evenings. • Practice the multiplication facts with your child. • Provide a quiet, clean area for nightly homework.

  13. A Final Reminder, • Not everyone learns in the same way at the same time. Depending on your child’s individual needs, he/she will be given alternative assignments from the rest of the class from time to time.
