In 2005, a maritime incident led to the suspension and resumption of weather observation reports by Japanese VOSs. Learn about the measures taken and the impact on data quality checks.
E N D
September 16, 2005 Maritime bureau of Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MLIT) asked the CSOs to suspend making weather observation reports due to exposure of ship’s callsign and position on public websites. Since then, JMA had discussed with relevant parties (Shipowners’ Association, MLIT, Coast Guard) to seek for measures to resume making weather observation reports. September 22, 2005 MLIT asked the CSOs to resume making weather observation reports by using dummy callsign “SHIP”.
