Fabulous Flags • Draw a flag that represents or symbolizes who you are. Include symbols and/or objects that show who you are, what you find enjoyable and important • On the other side of the paper do the same thing, but instead of you, draw a flag that represents your ministry.
Read 1 Corinthians 9:19-23 • In what ways does this passage relate to community relations? • What are some practical ways in which you can use the ideas in this passage in your community?

Development of a Community Relations Policy • Designate spokesperson • Everyone refer inquiries to them • Screen all outbound materials • Represent YFC transparently, truthfully and clearly • Follow the law • Be careful how you act on social media
Discussion Questions • What are the risks of not having a community relations policy? • What are some examples of other organizations or businesses that have displayed good community relations?
Identifying Your Key Publicity Pathways • Decide who your audience is • Select relevant communication channels • Keep them up to date
Cultivation of a Relationship with the Community • Your community is your constituency (government, businesses and spiritual leaders). • Don’t need to agree, but you need to respect their community roles and influence • Look for ways to engage the community
Development of Publicity Materials • You never get a second chance to make a first impression! • Plan your publicity materials to match your ministry cycle • Feature Articles • Press Releases • Picture Captions • Supplements or inserts
Individual Exercise Identify the key publicity pathways for your local program with key contacts. TV/Radio __________ Contact Person ________ Print Media ________ Contact Person ________ Church Media _______ Contact Person _______ Identify a planned activity where one of the above could be a useful promotional pathway. Discuss what would be the best way to use that pathway and devise a schedule for that promotion.
Development of a Strategy to Deal with Negative Publicity • Know who to refer people to who have inquiries and only allow them to respond • Craft your responses wisely and don’t refuse to respond • Do not speak “off the record” and when in doubt seek legal advice
Group Exercise Task 1. Use the following guidelines to compose a ten minute talk on your ministry for a local community organisation. Material that is best received is typically: • Of current community concern • Affects the community’s children • Involves celebrities or dignitaries • Is amusing • Has human interest impact Task 2. Use similar guidelines (with a more Christian emphasis) compose a ten minute talk introducing your ministry to a local Church.
