SM Institute forAnalytical Philately If You Have Research Ideas We Have Money John Barwis FRPSL FRPSV World Stamp Show, New York 2016
A Real Need • Analytical research can solve philatelic mysteries • Philately has untapped technical expertise • General unawareness of analytical possibilities • Analytical research carries a cost burden The opportunity • Connect philatelists with analytical resources • Provide technical advice • Provide funding
The IAP Mission IAP is a virtual Educational Institution dedicated to applying analytical techniques to philatelic studies, to provide long term benefits to all aspects of philately.
The Institute Offers • Access to experimental equipment • Training in research methodology • A network of technical experts • Guidance in conceptualizing projects • Assistance in documenting results • Financial assistance
Ideas will come from: • Individual philatelists • Specialty groups • Reviews of worldwide scientific work • YOU
Collaboration Is Paramount
Research Grants • Grants will be to qualified philatelic scholars. • Grants may be made on a cost-sharing basis in conjunction with similar awards from allied philatelic institutions. Example: An applicant is awarded a $2,000 grant from the National Postal Museum. If the research proposal is approved for funding by the IAP, we will award a matching grant of up to $2,000.
Grant Requirements • Demonstrable abilityto perform analyticalresearch. • Formal proposalsubmission to IAP. • Evaluation and selection by IAP. • Affiliation with an educational institution not needed.
Funding and Duration • Intent: allow researchers access to facilities not normally available to them. • Payments depend on a project’s spending needs. • Grants typically limited to $2,000. • Grant duration is 12 months including publication.
How to Apply • Anyone wanting to help solve an open philatelic mystery may apply. • IAP can help lay out your project and can aid in proposal writing. • IAP will use its own resources and extensive network to find others who may be able to help your project succeed.
I don’t have the ability… • But I have no technical background! • But I don’t understand the technology! Not to worry! IAP can connect you with people who will work with you, or for you, at whatever level makes you comfortable.
Examples of Applications • Physical Sciences • Chemical Sciences • Optical Sciences • Mathematical and Computer Sciences • Printing and Paper Sciences “Social Sciences” will not fall within the IAP purview
Why Strategic Alliances? To allow: • Access to libraries and archives • Access to staff “experts” • Access to experimental hardware To: • Reduce technical risk • Share and disseminate results • Enhance philatelic enjoyment
Current Alliances National Postal Museum, Washington Philatelic Foundation, New York V. G. Greene Foundation, Toronto U.S. Philatelic Classics Society Confederate Stamp Alliance
Why Centers of Excellence? To provide: • Access to state-of-the-art forensic equipment • Access to faculty specialists • Access to graduate students for possible support Which helps IAP: • Eliminate equipment cost and maintenance • Stay current with evolving hardware
