  1. Transformations in Quilts

  2. Quilts • The major characteristics of many quilt designs are patterning and symmetry. • Quilt are often made up of blocks. The design come to form individual blocks, that use color and shape patterns and symmetry, which h are repeated on a quilt top. • Sometimes , the designs in a quilt are also bases on a mathematical process called a transformation.

  3. Transformations A transformation is the movement of a shape in a plane-a flat surface on which a straight line can connect any two points of the area (think of a quilt laid flat as a plane).

  4. Transformations • Shapes on a plane ( or a quilt top ) can move in three ways.

  5. Translation • In a translation, a shape is slid a given distance in a given direction so it looks like an exact duplicate of itself.

  6. Reflection (uses symmetry) • The second kind of transformation is the reflection. • This is the process of flipping a shape over a mirror line.

  7. Rotation • The Third kind of transformation is called a rotation. • Rotation is the process of turning a shape a give direction and angle about a fixed point.
