Michigan Merit Curriculum Requirements: • 4 credits of English • 4 credits of Math, including Algebra, Geometry and Algebra II (a math or math-related class must be taken during senior year) • 3 credits of Science, including Biology, Chemistry or Physics and a third Science class • 3 credits of Social Studies, including World History/Geog. (1), US History/Geog. (1), Civics (1/2), and Economics (1/2)
1/2 credit Michigan Merit Curriculum PE • 1/2 credit Michigan Merit Curriculum Health • 1 credit VPAA (Visual, Performing or Applied Arts • Starting with the class of 2016, 2 credits of World Languages • On-line Learning Experience
Norway Graduation Requirements Students must earn 24-1/2 credits during their 9th to 12th grade years to graduate. If the following classes are taken in 8th Grade and passed, the student will earn credit toward their MMC completion, but the credits will not count toward their 24-1/2 needed to graduate: Algebra, Earth Science and Spanish I
No Additional Requirements beyond the Michigan Merit Curriculum • Once the student has met the MMC requirements, the student may choose their course selection • Parents are encouraged to go to careercruising.com with the student to aid in course selection, based on the student career goals.
Typical 9th Grade Schedule • Math (Algebra or Geometry) • English • World History/Geography • Biology (or Integrated Science) • Spanish II (or Spanish I)* • PE/Health* • Learning Outcomes (Study Hall)* *PE, Health, Spanish I and Spanish II are required for graduation, but may be taken in a later year to substitute an elective or 2

College Requirements • When deciding on what electives to take, consider the following: • What classes would be best for the student’s career goals • What classes should be taken to meet the admission requirements for the chosen college (go to the college web site to find this information)
Differences HS v. MS • Must retake classes if you fail • No extra credit/study guides • No test retakes/late work accepted • Grading policies (homework vs tests) • Must READ the textbook • Homework nightly in most classes (bell to bell) • Time Management: How to study?/Extracurriculars • Final Exam Prep starts the first day (40/40/20)
Testing • 8th Grade—Explore (pre-pre-ACT) • 9th Grade—Social Studies MEAP • 10th Grade—PLAN (pre-ACT) • 11th Grade • ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery), used by the military and for career exploration • MME: Given in March, 3 components including the ACT, ACT Work-keys, and Michigan MME Testing
Michigan Student Service Awards Students must complete 400 hours of volunteer service during their 9th to 12th grade years Documentation is due by March 1st Guidelines for what does and does not count will be available in the fall (DISCA is working on a checklist)
