Objectives Students will learn about the history and resources of Afghanistan. Students will learn about what countries were involved in Afghanistan’s many crisis's.

Facts • It is landlocked. • Population: 33.6 million • Life Expectancy: 44 male, 45 females • Languages: Persian, Pashtu, Turkic Languages
Facts • 53% of the population lives below the poverty line • 80% of the labor force is involved in agriculture
Afghanistan before 1978 Political boundaries did not match tribal boundaries. It was between 2 empires: British and Soviet Union, which never allowed the other to rule Afghanistan The country was never pushed through modernization with regards to communications, administration, education, and health care.
Afghanistan before 1978 • 4 major cities: • Kabul (capital) in the east • Kandahar in the south • Heart in the west • Mazar-i-Sharif in the north • 4 main ethnic groups: • Pashtuns • Tajiks • Uzbeks • Hazaras • One main religion: Islam • Majority Sunni • Minority Shi’a
