  1. Weather BellRinger • Old wise tail says, “My bones are aching, so it’s about to rain.” • What would you say could make this true, what type of system which effect the weather?

  2. Atmosphere and Weather Composition and Layers of the Atmosphere

  3. Review • Fronts http://glencoe.mcgraw-hill.com/olcweb/cgi/pluginpop.cgi?it=swf::430::356::/sites/dl/free/0078617871/164155/515_Fig_11.swf::Fronts Note carefully what is taking place

  4. Review • Storm safety • Hurricanes • http://oceanexplorer.noaa.gov/edu/learning/player/lesson14.html • http://oceantoday.noaa.gov/hurricanehunters/ • Homework sheet of storm labeling

  5. Defining Winds • High pressure systems try to fill and balance with a low pressure system, creating winds. • Model pressure difference with balloon rocket. • More dense cool air and less dense warm air also contributes to winds. • Uneven heating of Earth’s surface causes a difference in temperature causing winds and a rotation of winds known as convection. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xWWowXtuvA

  6. Winds measured • Direction • Velocity • Beaufort Wind Scale (handout)

  7. Heating of the Atmosphere • Heat transfer from the sun rays contacting Earth’s surface, water, and other items creates uneven heating. • Heat is transferred into the Earth’s atmosphere by radiation, conduction, and convection.

  8. Winds • Coriolis Effect • The Earth’s rotation causes moving air and water to turn right in the Northern Hemisphere and turn left in the Southern. Affecting other weather systems. (Page 456-457 Book) • Global Winds • These winds are huge systems which carry across the entire globe and have a typical pattern according to the region.

  9. Jetstream • www.srh.noaa.gov/jetstream • A narrow belt of strong winds in the upper troposphere. • In the winter the temperature difference is greater causing the Jetstream to move faster. • Jet airplanes take advantage of the Jetstream, like the ocean stream in “Finding Nemo”.

  10. Current Weather • http://www.wral.com/weather/video/1076424/ • NOTICE what the current conditions are and tell me something you know about them.

  11. Writing Summary • A paragraph each. • List different atmospheric conditions which will change weather. • Different careers within weather forecasting and careers which depend upon the accuracy of forecasts.
