What is an Extremophile? • An extremophile is an organism that thrives under "extreme" conditions. • They are prokaryotes in the kingdom Archaea.
Terms Used to Describe Extremophiles • suffix –phile, meaning "lover of," • prefix specific to their environment • For example, acidophiles are organisms that love (phile) acid (acido).
Halophiles- these microbes live in salty environments (dried lake-beds and salt-flats) Halophiles
Thermophiles Live in hot springs that reach temperatures of 80º C (177ºF)
Archaebacteria The orange scum is archaeabacteria found in Rotorua, New Zealand The rusty color on the rocks of this volcanic pool lives near mount Vesuvius in Italy.
