II. Funding DOE/NP funding levels have been challenging in recent years. Here is the President’s Request for NP and the total allocated NP funding since FY 2009 (K$): Category FY 2009 FY 2010 FY 2011 FY 2012 FY 2013 FY 2014 PReq: 510080 552000 562000 605000 526938 569938 Alloc.:512080 535000 540114 547387 519859 t.b.d. Evidently we departed from a strong growth scenario during FY 2010 to FY 2012. NP total funding decreased significantly in FY 2012 -> FY 2013.
II. Funding (cont.) • ME research funding, which is of greatest interest to this audience, has recently been in • the range ~ 35 - 40 M$. The two main components are research funding for national lab • groups and university groups. These are shown below for the period FY 2009 – FY 2012 (K$): • Category FY 2009 FY 2010 FY 2011 FY 2012 FY 2013 • labs: 16814 16908 17863 17440 t.b.d. • univs: 18678 19422 19191 16941 “ • NP research support decreased in FY 2012 due to a ~ flat overall NP budget and increasing • commitments elsewhere in the program. Approx. half of the univ. reduction was due to • grants ending; the remainder was achieved through uniform recommended budget limits • relative to FY 2011 for existing research grants, carryover, and no new starts. • Some serious problems were addressed through supplemental funding. • Having met the MENP research budget constraints in FY 2012, fortunately no additional reduction in university grant base funding relative to FY 2012 was necessary in FY 2013.
III. Some positive developments • Early career awards • This program is intended to address the difficulty new investigators have in getting funding for a new grant. • 2013(8 NP awards, 2 MENP related) • Mike Williams (MIT) • Gluonic Excitations in Mesons • GlueX detector and PID, data analysis algorithms and software. • William Detmold (MIT) (NP Theory) • From Quarks to the Cosmos: Ab Initio Studies in Nuclear PhysicsNN and NNN, [..]Y nuclear forces from LQCD: Apps. JLAB, light nuclei and hypernuclei, • nuclear astrophysics (n stars) • Recall 2012 (7 NP awards, 1 MENP) • Silviu Covrig (TJNAF) • Computational Fluid Dynamics Facility to Support Targets for the 12 GeV Program at Jefferson Laboratory
III. Some positive developments (cont.) (NP = lead office) NP SciDAC-3 Projects (8/2012 – 8/2017) LQCD (NP) PD Frithjof Karsch (BNL) co-PD science David Richards (JLAB) NUCLEI PD Joe Carlson (LANL) co-PD sci. Witek Nazarewicz (U.Tenn/ORNL) NUCLEI CalLat CalLat PD Wick Haxton (LBNL/UCB) co-PD sci. Tom Luu (LLNL -> Bonn) The 3 main areas of NP (4 with FIs added). 5-year multisite comp. NP projects, esp. postdoc and g.s. support. Tot. 5-year funding $23M: NP $10M, ASCR $10M, NNSA $3M. LQCD What can they do for JLAB?
MENP from LQCD e.g. (JLAB) What strongly interacting q&qbar&g mesons (q-qbar, q-qbar-g, …) does QCD predict that JLAB experiments will produce after the ~ 0.3G$ 12 GeV upgrade? {incl. exotic mesons} Lattice QCD results: MC: 1) ask the right questions, 2) stomp on it M, q.nos.; just what we need to know! Future physmu,d, strong decays. Spectrum of I=0 light mesons, including exotics, expected to be seen at JLAB (GlueX, 12 GeV upgrade). J.J.Dudek et al, Phys.Rev. D83 (2011) 111502
IV. NP Comparative Review and MENP • The MENP review is 10-14 June 2013, Gaithersburg Marriott Washingtonian Center. • Your POC for the review is Kyungseon Joo (detailee at DOE/NP), • kyungseon.joo@science.doe.gov. • Updated review information (charge letters, agenda/schedule, any changes • may be found at the URL http://science.energy.gov/np/news-and-resources/ • Most talks (1-2 PIs) are 30 mins ( = 20 mins talk + 10 mins discussion). • 44 presentations scheduled, from 6 natl. lab. groups and 38 university groups. • Your briefing package should already be uploaded. Your MENP presentation • should be emailed to K. Joo at DOE on or before 6 June 2013.
