  1. Regional Runs Future Work Next 6 months Andrea Castanho; Ke Zhang; David Galbraith; YadvinderMalhi Jingfeng Wang; Scott Saleska Mike Coe; Michel Muza; Abby

  2. Update on input data • Soil Data • Soil texture - Combination Quesada and IGBP-DIS (1km) • Soil depth - 4 meters for each grid cell- Run with 10m • Soil Properties • Pedotransfer Functions – Campbell • Pedotransfer Function – Tomasella & Hodnett - David • Land-use data • preliminary regional simulations – potential vegetation; • Historical land-use data are from Hurtt et al. land-use data. • Atmospheric CO2 • Pre-industrial constant atmospheric CO2 concentration (278 ppm) are used for model spin-up; • Changing atmospheric CO2 concentration are used for model simulations from 1715 to 2005.

  3. Update on input data • Meteorological drivers: Sheffield et al. corrected NCEP data at 1-degree resolution from 1970 to 2005. • Meteorological driver for future runs: Corrected GCM data • Meteorological data from Jingfeng • Time period: 1990-2010 • Time resolution: hourly • Spatial resolution: met data 10km

  4. Update on validation data • Carbon fluxes - Reichstein, 2010 Science - MODIS • GPP/NPP / NPPwood – Malhi et al. • NEE • Ecological stock and state variables • Aboveground biomass (AGB) • Saatchi et al. • Alessandro Bacini • Malhi et al, 2006 • Canopy height – • Lidar-GLAS not very well comparable ?? • check with Alessandro Bacini product - Andrea • LAI – MODIS • Litterfall – Malhi et al. • Soil Carbon – SOTER - David • Hydrological components • Total runoff/discharge/drainage - Mike • Water Storage Change- GRACE - Mike • Evapotranspiration (ET) • Jung et al, 2010 Nature, Josh Fisher, Malhi et al • Ke • - Remote sensing data • - Hydrological components • Andrea • - ground based measurements • David • soil carbon data -SOTER • forest cover

  5. Up date on output data AGB AGB_PFT Litterfall Soil SoilMoist SoilTemp Soil Carbon Carbon GPP NPP / NPPwood NEE AutoResp HeteroResp Energy Balance • Qle • Qh Water Balance • Evap • Qs • Qsb • Qt • DelSoilMoist Vegetation • VegT • CanopyH • LAI • NamePFT

  6. Future runs • First Preliminary Simulation • Second Simulation: Coarse Resolution • Potential Vegetation , soil depth 10m – 1970-2005 • Land Use Change, soil depth (?) – 1970-2039 • Third Simulation: High resolution • Quesada Soil texture data • Soil Depth to be defined • Jingfeng Met drivers • Starting in 25km • Time step: hourly • Time interval: 1990 - 2010

  7. Future Analyses • Comparisons Between Model and Observations • AGB, canopy height, carbon flux, soil carbon • Energy Balance • Carbon Flux • Water Cycle • Is the magnitude of the CO2 fertilization effect in the regional simulations reasonable? • Examine patterns of inter-annual variability including the 1983 and 1998 El Nino events, and the 2005 and 2010 droughts (check for Met drivers) • Evaluate model AGB predictions against Saatchi biomass map at an aggregated regional scale rather than the grid cell scale. • Is there higher biomass in the Eastern Amazon as predicted by ED and IBIS?
