  3. FIGHTING BREAKS OUT • US aid nationalists • $2 billion in aid, no soldiers • Chiang gov. weak, defeated by communists • Chiang flees to Taiwan

  4. COMMUNISTS TAKE OVER CHINA • American public stunned • Containment failed • Truman criticized • Hesitant to aid Asia • US blame internal affairs of China

  5. ISSUES IN KOREA • Japan ruled Korea since 1910 • Japan left Korea after WWII ends • 38th parallel divides Korea • Divides countries resources • Industry in North (Communist) • Agriculture in South (Non-Communist) • Each claim rights to Korea

  6. THE KOREAN WAR • June 1950, North invades South • Truman acts quickly • 400,000 US troops to South Korea • Gen. MacArthur leads all troops

  7. MACATHUR’S COUNTERATTACK • North Korea seems unstoppable • UN troops land behind enemy lines • N. Korean soldiers surrender or retreat • UN troops/S. Korean troops can’t cross 38th parallel • Defensive war to offensive • MacArthur would unite Korea • Truman weary of China

  8. CHINESE FIGHT BACK • UN troops advance in North • China sends troops across Yalu River • UN troops retreat • MacArthur underestimated China • Stalemate ensues

  9. MACARTHUR RECOMMENDS ATTACKING CHINA • Land war in China would occur • Blockade China, use atomic bombs • Truman rejects idea • Soviet Union has alliance w/China • Attacking China could lead to WWIII

  10. MACARTHUR vs. TRUMAN • MacArthur wants China • Truman wants limited war • MacArthur tries to go over Truman • Spoke to newspapers and Republicans • Truman fires MacArthur • Truce ends war in 1953 • Korea divided still today…
