  3. By the end of the lesson YOU will: • Be able to explain what classification is and give examples. • Have identifiedkey points from two arguments about where classification comes from. • Have consideredlinks to the concepts of human universality and cultural diversity.

  4. What is classification? Classification is a system of organisation of people, places and things, and concerns the ways humans see the world. Classification is a way of imposing order on aspects of nature, on people’s relationships with nature and on relations between people. It is one of the most basic aspects of human thinking and language shared by all human beings. Examples of classification might include the way we classify relatives or what we consider pollution/purity/taboo. YOUR TASK (2) But where does it come from? There are two main views on this. As I tell you about these, place the information in the correct place on your sheet.
