  3. National Implementation Plan • Update on: • Canadian National Committee • Canadian Inventory of Sustained Arctic Observing Activities • Canadian-led SAON tasks • (with more Canadian-supported SAON tasks)

National Coordinating Committee(Canadian SAON Ad Hoc Working Group) • WHO? • Comprised of over ten federal government departments; three universities; ICC and ITK; provincial/territorial governments • Chair: Helen Joseph • Secretariat: Canadian Polar Commission • Teleconference calls; website development (external and internal)

National Coordinating Committee • WHAT? • Committee has existed for approx two years • Hold regular Teleconference calls; • January 11 and after this Board meeting • Prepared the Canadian Inventory of Arctic monitoring • Opportunity to keep profile on SAON; preparation of Canadian member to the SAON Board and update the SAON community within Canada • Discussion on Canadian-led SAON Tasks; participation in SAON networks

  6. Inventory of Arctic Observing Networks • Completed in 2010 • In 2011, Government of Canada’s Federal Integrated National Science and Technology Strategy; used the Canadian SAON inventory • Additional information was gathered in 2011 that could be incorporated into the Canadian inventory

  7. IPY Conference 2012 • April 22 – 27, Canada will host the IPY Conference in Montreal • Possible SAON side-meeting?

Update on Canadian SAON Tasks Task 3: Circumpolar Health Observatory Task Co-Leaders: Susan Chatworth, Institute of Circumpolar Health Research and Kue Young, University of Toronto • Tremendous progress; now fully functional and interactive • All data to 2004 are up-to-date; with several modules updated to 2009 • Several data briefs have been published in the International Journal of Circumpolar Health • Conference: Circumpolar Health Metrics: Statistics in support of Health Systems Improvement, October 2011; discussion how different data systems could be used to inform policy makers • Book release at IPY Conference, April 2012 • Great example of science informing policy / decision makers • See www.circhob.circumpolarhealth.org for the Health Observatory

Update on Canadian SAON Tasks Task 4: Role of Remote Sensing in Arctic Monitoring Task Leader: Yves Crevier, Canadian Space Agency • Continues to be good interest in this Task • Has merit as a Task, as Remote Sensing continues to represent a key source of observational data for the Arctic • Need to ensure linkages with WMO work – Polar Space Task Group • Need to consider how to move this Task forward – discussions with engaged partners

Update on Canadian SAON Tasks Task 5: The Canadian IPY Data Assembly Centre Network: A Case Study Task Leader: Scott Tomlinson, Aboriginal and Northern Affairs Canada • Case study task: to develop best practices for sustainable data management network for Arctic Science • IPY Data Assembly Centre Network has been active in preserving data and information from Canada’s IPY Program BUT it has been complex process • Montreal meeting, December 2011, to develop governance model for Network (including funding post-IPY) • Actively seeking other Arctic Science initiatives and partners • Will deliver a report to SAON Board on the development of the Canadian IPY Data Assembly Centre Network (with recommendations/lessons learned) • See www.polardata.ca for metadata and data; developing wiki space for documentatio

  11. Update on Canadian SAON Tasks Task 9: An International Review of Community-based Monitoring in the Context of Sustaining Arctic Observing Networks Process Task Leader: Eva Krummel, Inuit Circumpolar Council, Canada • Progress has been good • Eva Krummel, ICC, will describe details

Update on Canadian SAON Tasks Task 13: Arctic Marine Biodiversity Monitoring Plan (CAFF/Circumpolar Biodiversity Monitoring Programme) Task Leader: Mike Gill, Canada (CAFF) • CBMP Arctic Marine Biodiversity Monitoring Plan was approved by CAFF Management Board, February 2011 and by SAOs • Plan is now in Implementation, with workshop held in Canada in September 2011 • Workplans for the Marine Steering Group and Marine Expert Networks have been approved • CBMP Arctic Marine Biodiversity Monitoring Plan continues to exemplify the principles of SAON (e.g. promote, facilitate, coordinate marine biodiversity • monitoring activities among circumpolar countries)
