What is a multigenre research project? • It’s a collection of pieces written in a variety of genres, informed by your research on a particular subject. • It presents perspectives on a research question, or proves your thesis. • It accomplishes the same goal as a traditional research essay, but in a more expansive and creative way.

  7. What is a genre? • A genre is a type of writing, like… • A poem • A traditional research paper • A newspaper editorial • Plays • Diaries • Cartoons • And LOTS, LOTS MORE!! (see separate handout for a long list of possibilities)

  8. How do I choose the genres to use? • Genres are chosen based on audience, the tone of your topic, your research, and your own creativity. • What genres will “speak” to the people whom you want to reach (your audience)? • Why?

  9. What’s required for this project? • Title Page • Table of Contents • Preface • Five entries (each a different genre) • Repetend • Epilogue • Works Cited (you should already have this finished)

  12. What’s a Preface? • An introduction to your work • Meant to greet readers and give a bit of background information about your project • You should introduce your subject and anything you think the reader should know about you and/or your project before they read it.

  13. What kind of information might I include in the preface? • How you came up with your idea • Why your topic is important • A key part of the story • A description of a crucial character, setting, central activity, repetend • An overview of the territory to come

  14. What’s a repetend? • A piece of your project that repeats or continues…recurring image or phrase • Creates unity among the various genre pieces • Gives the writer an editorial voice the reader can easily relate to…helps your reader better understand your central theme

  15. Ways to incorporate repetend in your project • Include the same phrase, sentence, or passage on each genre page as a heading or somewhere else in the text • Include a description or design on each piece…placed strategically for easy recognition • Include a running commentary from you, the writer, following or preceding each genre piece

  16. Create a character and follow his/her reactions to the pieces • Create a character involved somehow in each piece of writing—an ongoing little story • Create a cartoon strip at the top or bottom of each genre page that comments on the ideas presented

  17. How do I decide what works for my project? • Think about your specific topic • What is the strongest image associated with that topic? • What words could powerfully express that image?

  18. What’s an epilogue? • An epilogue is similar to a conclusion, and a place to reflect on your topic • A chance to share your thoughts, feelings, and concluding information with your audience

  19. What do I include in an epilogue? • How writing about this topic has changed your perspective on your topic • What you learned overall • How you felt about using the multigenre project instead of a longer research paper • What you hope your audience learns from your project • Why you chose the genres you did for your project
