  2. Location and Size Germany is a medium-sized country located in east central Europe. It’s bordered by Austria, Belgium, The Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Poland, and Switzerland. 357,022 square kilometers

  4. Climate The climate of Germany is temperate and marine. This means that Germany experiences substantial amounts of rain. It’s cool and cloudy. The summers and winters are wet Occasionally Germany also faces warm mountain winds.

  5. People • The population is 82,329,758. • 17th highest populated country 13.7% of the population is from 0 to 14 years of age. 66.1% of the population is between the ages of 15 and 64. The other 20.3% is 65 years of age and beyond. • Average age: • Male: 42.6 • Female: 45.2b

  7. Early History The Germanic people came from along the Baltic Sea coast. The German territory was once dominated by the Romans. Between the 2nd and 6th centuries, change and destruction took place.

  8. Wars WWI- Germany was part of the central powers. WWII- Germany wanted revenge because of the Treaty of Versailles from WWI.

  9. Current Event Angela Merkel On November 11th 2009, Angela Merkel, the Chancellor of Germany, visited Paris to take part in Armistice Day ceremonies. This is significant because Germany and France haven’t always gotten along.

Education • The German Education system provides elementary and 3 types of high schools which the students are divided into. • Grundschule is the word for elementary school. • Hauptschule is for slower students. • Realschule leads to a part time vocational school. • Gymnasium prepares students to go onto college.

  13. Sports & Entertainment • Popular sports include: soccer, volleyball, basketball, skiing, field hockey and tennis. • Entertainment: Germans are very into American movies and music.

  15. A Student’s Daily Schedule • Wake up, have a breakfast of breads, meats, and cheeses. • School starts around 7:30 and there is a break at 10. • Lunch is at 12. • The length of the school day depends on the classes they take, but generally ends around 4.

  17. Traditions, Customs & Religions • Around Christmas time, people attend Christkindlmarkt, or Christmas Markets. • Another German tradition is hiding a glass pickle inside the Christmas Tree. The child that finds the pickle receives an extra gift. • Oktoberfest is a HUGE festival that takes place in Munich in September.

  19. Foods • German food is very hearty. • Noodles, potatoes, sausage (Bratwurst) and veal (Wiener schnitzel) arte porpular. • Germans also love their beer. It is typically consumed alongside meals. • Children can drink starting at 14, but the majority of them don’t drink to get drunk, like American teens would.

  20. Music & Dance • Ludwig van Beethoven, Johann Sebastian Bach, Franz Schubert, Johannes Brahms, Richard Wagner are all famous composers that lived in Germany. • Traditional dancing in Germany is folk dance such as Polka.

  21. Interesting Tidbits • Germany has many castles, including the one that inspired Walt Disney to build his own. It’s called Neuschwanstein.
