What are PNs and PAs? • This is a complement that identifies or modifies the subject of a linking verb. • NO ACTION VERB!!!!!!!!!! • Predicate nominatives (P.N.) and predicate adjectives (P.A.)are the two types.
Predicate nominative • Identifies or refers to the subject of a linking verb. • Do you remember what those things are? • May be a noun, pronoun or word group that functions as a noun.
P.N. examples • Andrew is the state champion. • Who is state champion? • The state champion is the Carrie.
Predicate adjective • This is an adjective that is in the predicate that modifies the subject of a linking verb. • Fluffy was dirty. • Do not assume that every adjective in the predicate is a P.A. • Fluffy was a dirty dog. This is a plain adjective – not a P.A.
P.A. • Terrence is happy. • Does the yogurt smell sour?
