Important Parent Information We are going paperless- if you have not signed up for the Parent Access Portal- please stop by the computer lab and Mrs. Rubin will help you. If you do not have computer access a note will be sent. On your child's desk you will find a Student Demographic Sheet - Please check all information- make changes if necessary-when completed place them in the basket.
Goals: • Pleasant and Successful Year • Build on each child’s strengths • Enrich each child academically • Increase self-esteem and confidence/”risk-taking” • Have Fun! • * Important to have an open line of communication so we can work as a team to ensure your child’s success.

Homework • 45-60 minutes a night-studying is homework • Homework is the students’ responsibility, but please check that it is complete and sign the assignment book. • 10% of grade (one “freebie”) • Student who miss 3 or more homework assignments will have a consequence of missing a recess. Please send notes if there is an extenuating circumstance. • Test Schedule • Read Science and S.S. almost every night.
Responsibilty *Students must check papers for name, spelling, and grammar. Points will be taken off!!!! This is an important NJASK skill. Students need to check their book bags when they get home to make sure they have supplies to do homework. If they don’t… Please help build attention skills- this is an area difficult for many students and causes missed information.
Literacy Program-Language Arts • Reading Street • Weekly selections pair fiction and nonfiction and stress comprehension strategies- • Selection quizzes /Unit Tests/ are given at the end of the selection and students may use the book, but they may not take them home. • Class work-Workbook skills and vocabulary • Friday -Spelling Test/must spell correctly in everyday work to receive an “A” • Language –class work –daily usage plus -end of unit test/review packet and weekly quizzes • More accountable for sentence structure, spelling, and punctuation-NJASK • Essay questions/Rephrasing must be used • Writing- daily and weekly -skill based • Center time/Seatwork –
Reading and Writing Workshop An integral part of Reading Street Rationale: By modeling reading behaviors, providing direct instruction that focuses on strategic reading and strategic writing, while giving students time to practice, we are providing a dynamic reading and writing experience. • Students will have a comprehension strategy/writing trait mini-lesson • Real literature • Independent practice/conferencing/sharing Writing Too!!!
Math Envision Math Program • Whole group instruction/small groups as needed • Must be organized • Please practice math facts!!! • Cooperative Groups • Computers/Math Center • Must show/explain how they got the answer • NJASK
Topics • Earth’s Surface and Interior • Sun, Moon, and Planets • Properties of Matter • Changes in Matter • Forms of Energy • Animals Science • Curriculum is activity based and hands-on so please try to not miss school • Scientific Method and Critical Thinking • Quiz at the end of each lesson/note packet • Tests at the end some units/ index cards
Social Studies • Regions of the United States • New Jersey • Quiz at the end of each lesson/note packet • Unit Tests • Study tool- use notes to make index cards, review these often
Grading • Tests/quizes-50% • Classwork-40% • Homework- 10% • Review tests which are sent home then sign and return. Classwork below an 80 also may need signatures • Please reward your child’s successes!!!!
Miscellaneous • Birthdays: small treat for whole class/ no peanuts/nuts – sugar can not be the first ingredient- please no candy!!! • If your child would like to pass out invitations please make sure everyone is invited. • Please send a note if there is a change in dismissal procedure/separate note for C.E.R. • NJASK- May/No Vacations Please!!!!! • If you take a vacation please let me know in advance so I can gather any missed work.
Music Lessons • Help choose an instrument you will like to listen to. • Lessons-30 minutes of instruction time • Band- Starts in January and requires 40 minutes of instruction time • Student is responsible for getting all missed assignments and completing the work independently • Class work comes first, if grades slip….
