Influences Inspire Exploration • Borrowed knowledge from Asia, Africa + Middle East • Eratosthenes • Marco Polo • Ptolemy • Created very accurate map: 150 AD • Lost after Romans fell in 500 AD
Columbus • Hopes to find all-water route to India • 1492: lands in San Salvador- thinks he’s in India- calls Natives “Indians” • Makes 3 voyages for Spain- dies believing he made it to India
Ferdinand Magellan • Searched for passage to Pacific Ocean • 1521: killed in Philippines • Crew 1st to circumnavigate the world
John Cabot • English Explorer • 1497: Discovers Newfoundland • Thinks it’s Asia: WRONG!!!! • Gave England claim to North America
Vasco de Gama • 1497: Sails around Cape of Good Hope • Finally discovers all-water route to India!!!
Sir Francis Drake • Pirate paid by England to steal Spanish gold • 1579: accidentally discovered California after he stole Spanish ship • 1st ship to sail around the world w/o death of their leader
Effect of Explorations • Europe: opened new chances for wealth, land, power • Europe forgets East/colonizes West • Holland, France, England command worldwide trade • Natives: lives changed forever • Many died from contact with Europeans- DISEASE • 50% of population dies w/in 100 yrs
