Body System Connections • Heart and Lungs • Work together to carry oxygen to the blood and take carbon dioxide out of it. • One of the most important interactions. • Heart keeps blood moving so cells stay alive.
Feeding Cells • Digestive System • “Disassembly line”. • Digestion is the breakdown of the foods into smaller and simpler molecules that can be used by the cells in your body.
Helping Digestion • Brain signals cells in your mouth to produce saliva. • Enzymes are proteins that help the body carry out chemical reactions. • As food passes to other areas of the body the brain signals for more enzymes to be produced.
Circulation and Digestion • Circulatory system transports blood that provides nutrients for cells. • Small intestine is 4-7meters long, and is lined with villi (small fingerlike projections). • Absorption: When food molecules (nutrients) in the sm. Intestine pass through the walls of the villi into the bloodstream. • Nutrients in the bloodstream are carried throughout the body. • What isn’t absorbed is passed through the body as waste.
