  1. Bellringer 1.3.19 • Go Formative • While you wait for your computer to load,     graph the graph of the day!     y=1/3x+2   EACH DAY YOU WILL HAVE A GRAPH TO COMPLETE WHILE YOUR COMPUTER LOADS. THIS WILL BE GRADED.   Write today’s date and objective in comp book. Grab an organizer and practice sheet from the shelf!

  2. Bellringer  •  Kim built a square flower bed in his backyard. The area of the flower bed is . What is the perimeter of the flower bed? DAILY GRAPH:

  3. Bellringer  DAILY GRAPH:

  4. By the End of Today! Learning Target I can determine if a relation IS or IS NOT a function with 80% accuracy.

  5. Agenda: Relation vs. Function Foldable Function families Practice!

  6. Any set of ordered pairs is a relation but it takes something special to be a function

  7. Video Intro to Functions http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUTXsPFx-qQ

  8. Functions and Gumball Machines You can pick your coin, but you can’t pick your color! Input=your choice Output=depends on the machine!

  9. Broken Machines NOT all tables and graphs are functions. To be a FUNCTION each input has ONLY one output.

  10. A FUNCTION is a relation in which each first value (input) is paired with one and ONLY ONE second value (output).

  11. Functions can be represented as ~ Set of Ordered Pairs ~Table ~Mapping (NEW!) ~Graphs

  12. Foldable-first box Ordered Pairs!

  13. Function Families! THINK of two numbers between  -5 and 5. On your notecard, CREATE and WRITE an ordered pair using those numbers.

  14. Function Family Selfie! Stand up and join yourself with 4 other people to make a relation. Head to FLIPGRID take a FUNCTION FAMILY SELFIE.  ALL faces and CARDS must be visible.  Use the text sticker to defend if you are JUST a relation, or if you are a function! https://flipgrid.com/1cc61f47

  15. Think back to the video… which variable represents theinput value, x or y? -1 0 1 2 3 5 3 4 7 4 Foldable-second box Ordered Pairs!

  16. FOLDABLE Mappings!   They are a lot like tables, only the numbers in Domain & Range are usually ordered least to greatest and only written once. Make a table for this mapping.

  17. -1 -1 0 3 1 -2 -2 -2 Y X Extra Examples of Mappings

  18. -2 -1 -1 14 0 -2 -2 -2 Ex 2 Extra Examples of Mappings

  19. You can’t have more than 1 FAVORITE color Each person can have their own favorite Two people can even share the same favorite. BUT 1 person can NOT have more than 1 favorite color.

  20. Function or NOT? If Domain and Range (x and y) were switched, would the function still be a function?

  21. Graph first one in pencil, second in RED PEN.  Do NOT connect dots-you only graph ordered pairs.

  22. Vertical Line Test • Intersects the graph at justone point, then it is a function. • Intersects the graph at morethan one point, then it is not a function.

  23. Vertical line test https://www.geogebra.org/m/swSdXQUs

  24. Determine if each graph is a function. Not a function Function

  25. Graphs – Vertical Line Test

  26. Head to GOFO for Daily Practice. Use your foldable to help you decide if each example is a “function” or “not a function”

  27. I can determine if a relation IS or IS NOT a function with 80% accuracy. Reflection How can I determine if a relation is a function? (Answer in one sentence.)

  28. Map #1 Map #3 Map #2 E X I T Map #1 and Map #3 are functions. Only Map #2 is a function Only Map #3 is a function Map #1 and Map #2 are functions

  29. Exit Ticket Graph 2 Graph 3 Graph 1 A. Both Graph 1 and Graph 3 are functions C. Graph 1 is the only function D. None are functions B. Both Graph 2and Graph 3 are functions
